ok been to a local engineers but they are more manufacturing place than anything, got some ideas and am going to attempt the thrust mod myself... now to my mind the bolts to secure the thrusts need to be soft, where abouts can i buy some? looking at the pics of carls they look like you could get some in b&q or are they anything special?
thanks lee

I would have said M4. I previously had some M4 allen screws drilled down the center 1mm diameter for the oil feed, but never got round to getting it sorted.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

ive gone with the m3, after all its only holding the thrusts against the block, the locating tabs stop the thrusts from spinning

sprocket cheers for the grub screw idea, ive been putting off drilling a 1mm hole in the block because i know i will brake it

If you do this, don't get black high tensile grub screws, I did and drills won't touch them. I then bought some stainless M4 grubs and drilled a 1.0mm hole in them no problems at all. Clamp an allen key in the drill vice then sit the grub on the hex to hold it.

ok i have now carried out the drilling and tapping of the block using the old thrusts as a template. i then came to drill the new thrusts i bought and the grooves in them are not in the same place as the old ones arghhhh!

however i carried on as i am countersinking the holes obviously so the screw heads fit below the bearing surface, so i'm unsure if they will be ok this way i may see if i can get different thrusts that are the same as my old ones

Just being picky, but would it be better to have the screws countersunk in the bearing surface rather than in the oil grooves, where they are slightly restricting the oil flow (and they are slightly weakening the thrust washer) ?.

i think i remember him saying he used his old washers as a template and as such the groves were in a different place to the new ones :/

Are two bolts on each bearing really necessary?

believed he just copied a pic someone posted up on here in another thread, but it does raise a question.

he'll be hung over today but i'll nag him to try and find the post he copied might be helpful.

imo only 2 ( or 3) screws are needed in one of the thrusts

Obviously you need a bolt in each thrust, but will the bearings flex too much with only one bolt in each half?

thanks for making me sound like some reckless alcoholic taz... haha

i shamlessly copied fast carl on this and as taz said i used my old thrusts as a template to mark out where to drill and tap the holes in the block and new thrusts didnt realise untill i marked it all out that the bolts were probably not in the most ideal place but i hope it should cause do drama as there will be more oil flow around the thrusts now...

as far as the thrusts flexing? they are quite soft and when countersinking the holes on my little pillar drill i managed to bend them slightly but where easy to tweak back,

as far as weakeneing them i have no doubt bloody great holes are not going to do them any favours but only time will tell if they let go fast carls seem to have held up ok with the abuse tom gave it last year...

the screws i went with in the end where m3 as i think the heads of the m4 ones may have been too big and make the bearing weaker still with the extra countersinking that would be needed..
