Probably stuck on the centre front stud.

Get some release fluid down there, leave it for a bit, then try and get something in between the head and block and prise it apart. Be careful not to damage the faces, but you could use a hammer and chisel with care.

i find it easyer to leave the rockers in untill the head has lifted, the valve springs lift the head that first bit enough to get fingers under the head

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

good news/progress this lunchtime!

i got the blummin head off

took all the head studs out & it took 15 good smacks with a 4lb lump hammer on a block of wood against the head, talk about stuck fast!!!!

any hoo! the exhast valve on no2 cylinder has a chunk missing out of it & the exhaut valves are all bright white in colour!!! usually they're a simular colour to the plugs! thats how i describe it anyhow!

bores the the metro turbo motor are really good, no lip at the top & there fluid-tight so the ring to bore clearance must be pretty close to spot on

the studs are fooked, my stud removing sockets have foobared the threads but i have some spares i think if not i'll pick some up at minits in solihull!

has anyone got any genuine turbo exhaust valves or know where i can get some????? i may have unleaded seats put in the head & recon it! paint it 350bhp-red! *surprised*D i think thats the paint-code

i have some pics for those that like a pic or two but i gotta pic up a lead for my phone

so........ thursday will hopefully be reassembly & restarting day!!! lets hope we have a good motor

also there is a pic somewhere but i cant find it, i need to know where the pipes to the boost solinoid go as someone has took a pipe off the boost solinoid by the carb i want the engine running bog stock boost & see if the OG ecu/solinoid works!

i made a booboo about the clutch, it dont have a feckin slave its a cable clutch as thos metro is a mk2 turbo so i either have a stretched cable or the plate is'nt sliding too well on/off the splines or the pressure plate may be a bit soft -arsed if its a cheapo replacement, or the clutch friction plate may be fcked, we'll see when i get it running right & drive it!

should i put a dump valve on it aswell as the intercooler? or is a dumpvalve a pain in the head on a daily????

had the chance this lunchtime to start preping the turbo motor for its replacement head which i've attacked with a light wire brush (the gold ones) in a drill & took all the carbon off

i'll lap in the valves this afternoon "by hand" not with one of those tools that you fit in a drill!!!! *surprised*P
so far it seems a good head!

also,, i've cleaned up the deck of the block & the tops of the pistons,
the piston in number 2 cylinder has a few dimples obviously from the bit of valve that broke off, it must have bounced around then out the exhaust port! the bore itself does'nt have a mark on it! which i think is suprising, i've left the large majority of carbon on this piston is i thought the dimples may cause hot spots!

the pistons are all still standard size & i left a measured amount of fluid in the bores overnight & not one bit of the fluid has drained to the sump which is good news

the short head studs are fcked, my stud extracter has flattened the threads, i think i'll pick some new ones up unless i have some in the garage

then we can reassemble this beast! *surprised*P

As usual I may be talking out my backside but am sure I have seen an old Austin Rover tech bulletin which says on MG's & Turbo's to run the inlets at 12thou and the exhuasts at 14thou

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

just measured another valve & it was 35.61

surely there should'nt be this amount for variation in the diameter of the valves????

mg metro size valves i think they are?
the ones i have are minispares ones i think, the heat treating is'nt great on them!!!!

much appreciated

right then chaps, i've got the head on, & got her started & running this afternoon, HOPEFULLY ITS OK NOW!

defo not running on 3 cylinders anymore, seems to be running well apart from being a bit tappety! well very tappety actually

got it up to temp but it went dark so i'll re-torque thee head bolts & all the connections i've messed with tomorrow

i gotta re-set the tappets as you'd expect, whats the most acurrate way, rocking the car back n forth seems a bit........you know

i cant get a socket on the crank bolt to rotate it the proper way

nothing seems to be leaking at present but ones all is re-torqued & tappets set i'll re-do the compression test to see what its running now!!!
i got new champion plugs for it today too

only prob in the engine bay to sort is the electric fan is'nt kicking in so i'll have to see whats not right there, if i cant find the fault i'll hard wire the fan off a switch!!!

same with the fuel pump, i'll pop a switch on it for a security measure

so as it stands so far big thanks all!
your a diamond bunch of chaps

cheers tom fenton for your straight talkin *surprised*P your a top man, good advice from top chap i'll get you a beer if i can make it to avon this year rather than ireland!

the car is fckin filthy! so i'm gonna break out the ramps & traffic film remover & degreaser & jet wash! then get ssome pics fgor you chaps of my dodgy metro

Check the fan switch in the side of the rad (drivers side of car). There should be two green wires going onto it. They interupt the earth to the fan with the temp switch. Doesn't matter which way round they go.

Not sure about the resistor - there's the starter relay on the end of the battery box.

You shoultn't need to take the slam panel of. The fan switch is just under the top rad hose on the rad, to the right of the fan in this picture:

right them buggers are being attched n tested 2moro! hope the fan is working as it should!

i think i'll try to get an intercooler on mine! i was wondering where to put one! *surprised*P

cheers bellamy that helps alot!
in the haynes it say you can test the fan switch thinkgy by bridging the terminals on the plug by the rad also, i think the theory is if the fan works when the wires are bridged the swith is duff

somthing like that anyhow! so if all this works out i just have to sort a bonnet & rattling back box & T&T the car & we should be good to go fingers crossed!!!!

yep, the asumption is if you join them and the fan runs it must be the switch.

you can test them however by removing them, and dunking them in boiling (or near) water while attached to an ohm meter.

That intercooler is from an MR2. We ended up putting an MPi mini rad allong side it as the metro one was no good for obvious reasons.

well its been took for a test drive today, & it go's well

my tappets need setting as the top end isa bit tickety tickety!

does'nt seem to be using any water, & i drove it with the heater on hot & the blower running! so the water has been well circulated, electric fan is kicking in as it should!

i dont seem to be getting much heat out of the heater? it has a new thermostat that i tested before i intalled it & its an 82 degree jobby

other than that it seems to spool up well & go's quite well, no smoke at all which is obviously a good sign

just need to do a rad flush, put new anti-freeze change the oil & filter & check the timing once i've set the tappets, pics are on route! cheers fella's you a bunch of diamonds!!!!

i think i'll add a bottle of that "water wetter" to help keep the coolent temps down too
