We all hear talk about the A-series block flexing, how will that be if it was made from aluminium?

You could always add the webs from the A+ *happy**happy**happy*

This document seems to imply that the die cast alloy block overcomes the rigidity problem.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Die casting would be more involved than machining a block out of billet.

Youd need to make a design then make a mould then try and seal the mould so it doesnt leak anywhere.
But the positives you wont need to chop a fucking huge billet of aluminium up to get one engine.

Aha! Understood.

In fact, thinking about it a bit more closely, you could die cast quite a lot of the shape of the block, then machine the rest of it. The parts like the dizzy hole and bearing slots and what not would be machined in regardless, so its definitely possible.
But so is sand casting if done to a high enough quality.

I honestly cant see an alloy block lasting long. My bores closed up and the deck face sunk in 2008 after only 2000 miles - admitted very hard miles, alloy surely will do the same meaning liners would fall out etc

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Liners won't fall out.. Stepped liners *wink*

Theyd still work loose though surely if the surrounding material is moving around.
Just thought also, with stepped liners youd never get 73.5 bore

I seriously doubt it!

leeds/wakefield.

how would ypou get enough water in the block to keep it cool, there wouldn't be enough surface area if the waterways were drilled from one side to the other,

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

you would have to make the billet block as an open deck then fill the block with a one piece 4 cyl billet deck/liner or a two piece billet deck/liner - similar to how Datron sleeve conversions are made - then you'd get 73.5mm into it

JK

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

What about more than 73.5?

Crikey,,, all this crap about how bores will flex & decks will give problems etc ,,, what planet are you guys on?
Motorbikes have been doin this shit for years with very little problems

for shit sake,,, look around,,, there are many late bike engines that work well & have done for many many years,,, it`s nothing new at all,,, just do the same thing

Or what...does the word "mini" mean "major-problems" with every aspect to you guys?

Shit there`s no real drama with a race mini donk as they are & have been for 500million milleniums,,, just making one lighter & with more support via 5 main bearings & far far better breathing whilst retaining even more strength seem impossible does it?

oh,,, sorry, then most late bike engines must be crap too then yeah?

it`s not hard,,, just cost a big chunk in design & set up... John K can afford it *smiley*
