leeds/wakefield.

colin, i doubt a band saw will touch these, if they are anyting like as hard as standard items.

i'd press it off,

support the cv on two angle irons at the joint with the cover and then press out through the plug in the bottom inside,
this little disk plug is only thin and will offer no resistance,

Carl, there is no plug in the bottom, That was the first thing I checked, these have been machined 'blind' that is the problem with trying to press it out, you would have to drill/ mill a hole in the middle of the pot to get to the end of the shaft.

Its not going on the band saw *happy* Its getting Plasma cut *hehe!*

Its whith the machine shop and they will do what it takes lol.

colin, that plug must have been put in post splining, the broach would have to pass well past the bottom and into the cv housing,

Just had a closer look after cleaning one up and yes you are right, there is a plug in there.

Its not my problem any more *laughing* I will pick up the diff cage on tuseday on the way back from Oxford *happy*

Im picking up the flywheel too, having been fitted with a new ring gear. The ring gear was £42 delivered from MED *surprised*

This job has not been an easy one *oh well*

*hehe!* no mate, there is a plug in there, its solid plug rather than just a cap of thin metal. Looks like its softer than the joint too.

Perhaps there are 'blind' machined joints, but these are not those.

I've seen those*happy* well maybe not as long, but they were big and vertical rather than horizontal (I used to work in a well known Car Manufacturers Transmission plant*tongue* The Nagel honing machines were hypnotic to watch And the Comau laser welder had a beautiful purple colour beam. I miss that place *oh well*)

The omly eay you would get a spline in the on a blind hole would be to spark it out,

Pot joint now removed!

It was as simple as Carl suggested, smart arse *tongue* *hehe!*

Drill a big hole in the plug then wedge the joint in a BIG vice mounted to a 1 ton steel bench and with a suitable drift and a really big hammer twat the end of the shaft with a hard fast blow *happy*

The clip broke and has gouges where it was jammed on the splines

Checked the balance of the flywheel while I was there, before they replaced the ring gear. The ring gear run out was a joke! and balance was out un surprisingly. I'll be glad when I see the back of this engine *Shooting*

Being trying to fit the drive shafts to my car. Drivers side went pretty much straight on, but the passenger side will not go on with any amount of brute force. Tried the passenger side on an old diff out of a box with no ring in the groove. Wouldn't go on at all and had to give the diff cage a good bashing to get it off again, even thought it wasn't on more than 3-4mm. Looks to me like the inside of the splined bit is too tight or the splines are the wrong shape/size.

Now off to look for two new inner pot joints...

If your engine is out of the car, maybe you can do what I had to with this engine , they where really stubborn specially the one I have the crow bar on in the photo, you need to keep turning the pot joint every 2 to 3 blows with the lump hammer, this allows the circlip to keep dropping in its groove until you get lucky, ignore the piece of wood I have propped the long bar with its just to take the photo, this worked for me after a bit of persistence.. Pulled off the other joint which came of as expected. Had a very crude measure of the two joints.

From the bottom of the valley of two opposing splines. The good one is 22.08mm and the bad one is 22.02mm. So the problem is obvious.

Undecided whether to replace them both or just the one that doesn't fit. Budgets are extremely tight...

No, but I've had some used pot joint cups on both to seal it while I got the oil pressure checked.
