Now I did here a few years back that the special tuning department of rover did create three Minis. These were front engine A series powered cars. From what I can gather the gear box had a specially designed diff housing to incorporate the prop shaft to the rear diff assembly.

The problem with this rather rigid 4wd system was that on tarmac there was a lot of wind up in the transmission which would cause the wheels to spin up once unloaded.

Apparently one of these cars did take part I the RAC rally in the final year non production or historical cars were allowed to enter the rally but not compete in the actual world rally.

Again the details are sketchy but it would seem that rover has done this. I would like to know for sure if they had and would love a look.

i thought that particular configuration was tested for the mokes but droped for one reason or another

IIRC the leyand 4wd mini was the answer to the 4wd capri that ford introduced to whip everyones arses at the rallycross.
BMC still had a 4wd moke from an earlier exercise used on the production line to pull cars that wouln't start, so they ripped this apart, coopered it up and ran the race the following week... I know the mini was restored and occasionally appreared at some shows, but the above pics are the best I've ever seen. *smiley*

I remember the minimag article for that, lots of interesting stuff about the history and the rebuild, but no pictures of the modified gearbox *angry*

I think this car was a 1275GT modified for autocross. Theres also a 4wd moke that was made for army use, but the 4wd system was a bit weak for any sort of power. This is from miniworld and the mini experience though, not first hand.

A guy used to turn up at Avon every year with a front engined RWD mini, had and Alfa engine IIRC.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph
