Mole grips might also be an option?

But welding a nut is my favoured option by far. always works for me.

Although last week spend a whole day drilling out hi temp studs from a gas turbine combustor casing in situ *frown* royal pain in the ass but being M8, i wasnt risking snapping an extractor off in them!

Wouldn't be Nimonic 80A or Waspalloy by any chance Iain ?

Done this a few times myself on big Mo Fo Naval Marine turbine igniter and atomiser bolts on Olympus, Tyne and Spey.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

id put a blob of weld on the stud ,then build it up to big and round and blobby and really glowing ,then let it cool ,then bit more glowing blobbyness ,then let it cool ,then ,then use mole grips .

Medusa + injection = too much torque for the dyno ..https://youtu.be/qg5o0_tJxYM

Sorry to go off on a tangent but it's sort of related.

We need to fill some holes left in my wing from poorly fitted arches. Am I right in thinking if we held a piece of copper behind the holes we could weld up the holes and then remove the piece of copper?

The copper would melt wouldn't it?

Copper or even a thick piece of aluminium will work as a backing strip.

Make sure its clamped up tight behind the hole or you still risk enlarging the hole, rather than filling it.

Many thanks for the replies.
I was planning on holding the "backing strip" by hand(welding glove on obviously) as it'll be hard to secure it.
