I don't have mine installed yet but I expect that in terms of cooling performance a significant improvement will be seen over a side mount setup. In terms of actual "go,go faster" performance I would say very little will be gained. (apart from the associated benefits of consistent engine temps)

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

"cooling performance" over standard, it cant be worse *happy*,
it just keeps the engine cool so the turbo can give more performance

I got an ebay special header, ive got the bottom pipe going to the rad takeoff and one of the top ones going to the top hose. This works well and bleeds itself, i am planning on running from the heater take off, through the turbo and back to the spare on the header.

Re the comments earlier in the thread about one model being slightly bigger, Ive just researched it and it "seems" it doesn't matter whether it's a cinquecento or a seicento, but the year....

up to 99ish 240mm tall core and 2000ish onwards a 285mm tall core

Add a bit for the frame and the later (presumably better) one starts to become a bit tight.

See here.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FIAT-CINQUECENTO-99-...=item414f81a4d7

Anyway, I've ordered the taller one.

Well, i't not as simple as it seems.....

Metro Mk1, pre 99 Fiat, and post 2000 Fiat.

There is, apparently, an intermediate with the Fiat, 99-2000 but it appears to be smaller than all the others and hard to find so I'll ignore it.

Metro, conventional design (thin rectangular water tubes soldered into metal endplate, crimped on plastic header with coarse spaced fins). This one tubes and fins are copper. However this one has the fan switch in from the back, so fouls the alternator in a Mini. Gavin's photo in another thread shows the switch is normally in from the end. Overall, very thin core but I believe they are made in two different thicknesses - if so, this must be the thin one....

Early and most common Fiat, strange design..... no frame and large circular water tubes going into composite aluminium/platic tubeplates and plastic headers crimped on. Lots and lots of very thin, closely spaced fins. massive surface area but potentially very restrictive to airflow. Without the frame, the fins are easily damaged. However, this may be down to the manufacturer of this particular one altering the original design (made in China on the box), other photos seem to show a frame that is lacking on this particular one. Fan switch in from end, threaded connection. Core is much thicker than the Metro one.

Later Fiat, not so much bigger, probabaly a lot less area as it has a frame and is back to conventional construction, but tubes/fins in aluminium. Slightly thicker than Metro, but a lot thinner than the previous Fiat version. NO fan switch port/hole etc.... fan must be controlled by engine ECU as I can't find one listed in any of the usual parts catalogues.

I've got one that has the dimensions of the middle one and the construction of the one on the right, but with a fan switch take of. The design/construction must be down to individual manufacturer. John has the one in the middle and it seems a little flimsy to me.

Anyway... fans. Is one enough or would having 2 be beneficial? I've got an 8" fan for mine which sits nicely inside my unmolested clubman steel front. I think I can get two in with out any mods to the inside of the valance. Do you think it's worth the money/weight/hassle?

i have the centre one, fit quite nicely in the front of the clubby, not plumbed in yet but i will be using it with only 1 fan,
the fan should only be need when im not moving, anything over 20mph and i think it should be good

I think you are correct, and that's why I ended up with the Metro one with the switch pointing in an unusual direction.

So long as the overall size, mounting points and hoses are in the same place, that seems to be all that matters.

Guys, that funny lump on the end opposite the outlets. Can it be cut off, got my eye on this radiator, but with an oil cooler stuffed in front too, the lump will need to go to make it fit.

I was hoping to use a mk2 metro radiator on my car, but they seem quite expensive and have less capacity compared to these cinq ones. I say go for it.

My side rad got killed by getting thumped by the electric fan between the inner wing the other day, hence the search for a decent side mount!

You can. I bought the cheapest one I could find and it had massive tubes going through the core. John had one like this on his clubman and it didn't keep it all that cool. We both replaced them with a slightly more expensive one that has multiple smaller flat tubes going through it. Worked a treat on John's car.

This one has numerous tubes. I did consider that when I saw the first one. plenty of surface area here.

You can't see the tubes in a picture. The flat bits are dividers. The tubes sit inside the fins. You need to look into the inlet to see what I'm on about.

Might just keep my eye open next time I'm passing a scrap yard then and get a genuine one.

The MPI one is holding out for the minute, but when another 100hp is throw at it, it will complain!
