Even if you run a sleve thing http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?ty=...id=36446&title=

I run a sleve on the hillclimber, but would keep a stat in a road car whenever possible.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

The pump has a built in temp control and controls the flow rate of coolant according to temp. Like a thermo but doesnt require a water pump that is taking power off the engine to run.

I find it hard to get the water up to temperature. We all agree on that it's beneficial to get the temp up as fast as possible, so why not run a thermostat?

The Davies Craig is set up so you dont need one, it circulates slowly until up to temp and then controls the flow to hold it there. Then if you thrash it it will flow quickly to bring temp back down. Also in Australia getting up to temp is not a problem. *wink*

THe thing to remember about the thermostat is that it has dual role.

It controls flow to maintain a constant temperature, but it also creates a restriction in the system to raise the pressure in the block and head above the radiator pressure. This raises the temperature at which the coolant will boil. Removing the restriction of the thermostat is to be avoided, even if you fit an electric water pump with a closed loop temperature control.

Wouldn't a blanking sleeve perform the restriction job?

Yes, but once you add the restrictor, most of the electric pumps available can't handle the extra pressure.

Looks strange as explanation. When water is cold and thermostat is closed there is no need to increase the boiling point. When water is hot the thermostat is open, so no restriction.

Regarding your signature about the Paris Metro: did you try the Moscow Metro ?

The thermostat still creates a considerable restriction when it is fully open and hot.

I've never been to Moscow, but Paris is OK unless you get pick-pocketed like I did at the Gare de Nord!

A restrictor in a small motor like a mini with only a small amount of coolant will be a pushover for one of these pumps. I have one on my Jeep which is built for the Malasian Rainforest challenge and the rad is in the back, it pushes water all that way and controls temps in a truck with a worked 4.8 litre straight six which is normally buried to the doorhandles in mud. The pumps also come standard on Ferraris and are built in Austaralia. Only downside is they are a bit big.
