along the micro car line, do smart cars have rear discs? bet they are easier to come by?
If not how about bike brakes with a hydraulic hand-brake?

Read the site, it wasn't made before 1906 so it needs a hand brake!

I though hydraulic hand breaks where a no no for MOTs?

Hydraulic handbrakes are fine for MOT so long as they are mechanically separate, i.e another set of calipers.

What I have seen before is a dummy handbrake mechanism that is moved at the same time as activating the hydraulic handbrake, this it passes the MOT.

And Scruffy - as for advantages : self compensating brake wear for one, no adjustments required, even for the MOT, no seized adjusters, no leaking rear wheel cylinders infecting the shoes ....... and yes, less unsprung weight.

Richard.

I haven't touched my rear brakes for years - the unsprung weight is much greater unless you go the KAD route - certainly with the Demon Tweeks/Rally Design Calipers and have you heard about coppaslip? lol

I know some people have had success with Mk2 Golf calipers.

I was going to recomend golf rears they are used on a plethera of kit cars like Westfields etc. as for the handbrake, i never heard of that rule before, if it is fitted it must be working, if it came from the factory with one 9 out of 10 it should still have one.

if you use the golf assemblies can you not use the handbrake kit froim one too ?

just firing thoughts out there.

Betwix Harrogate and York

Wilwood make a hyromechanical calliper for just this purpose. small and light with a mechanical lever for the handbrake.

price might be heavyweight though.

if your considering the golf calipers use the mk3 on ones; the earlier ones had a tendancy to sieze up and this was apparently resolved for the mk3; its a regular mod to use the mk3 ones on the mk2 gti's

I looked at the Golf caliper when I was looking into it. They are cast iron and weigh a fucking ton, hence the Peugeot calipers which have an alloy body.

There is no carrier with that, and most modern calipers don't have the carrier, as its actualy part of the upright or hub

I have been looking at the Bendix calipers from the Peugeot and Citroen cars. Ally cylinder and cast iron bridge, so should be a good comprimise.

I saw one on a trailer the other day, they looked quite compact. I had considered taking the whole hub of the donor car. Obviously there'd be some work to get the PCD set and the hub to mount onto the mini rear arm.

the rear disks on my crx still uses the hydraulics to work them without a seperate mechanical action, ive looked into using bike calipers before on the rear end but that ATV one looks like it could work.

I've read some dutch guy used Volvo V40 calipers in combination with fiesta disks.
IIRC my Volvo 480 had ones with cable for handbrake.
