Straight cut gears is not a problem on a road car. Just use helical drops.

Not to poo poo your R&R Colin. But what’s the point..? I don't just don't your question really. You can now get a Minispares gear kit for about £250. You've just spent nearly that on a Kad Pinion support. I my eyes it’s not worth the bother finding out. A man with your skills could build a box with your eyes shut. I know yours is a road car ( noise can be a pain ) but just save yourself the hassle or smashing stuff up just for fun. With all those revs of a K engine and turbo its not going to be quieter anyway. Are we not all after more time driving our cars than rebuilding them? Si P.S. Please don’t take my comment the wrong way. Yes yes Its both cost and noise. Im not so sure where you found a Minispares gear set for £250 though

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be... So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'... On 26th Oct, 2004 Tom Fenton said:

hmmmm, In 4th how quite is a straight cut kit with helical drops? obvously theres no power being transmitted throgh the straight cuts, but will they still whine a bit? Exactly the same as a standard car. Gears make no noise when there is no loadings on them. 9.85 @ 145mph

I have the 24 teeth drops with timkin idler and I can't say it's that loud at all. When your just setting off in first with a 3.1 FD it's quite noticable as you are really loading up the gears (in a car park people that are walking past suddenly turn around and stare, haha silly people...) 4th is OK on constant throttle, infact today on the way home from work the road noise was drowning out the drops.
