My thinking is - the bigger the initial clearace, the larger the ring gaps will be come rehone / re ring time, so it could pay to go with as little clearance as would be acceptable.

My last engine had 5 thou piston to bore clearance, and although the ring gaps were at the limits of tolerance, it never smoked and had high compression.

I agree, always aim for minimum possible as it will increase lengevity of the engine. But if you don't know the minimum, best guess is all you can do.

For instance, the Mega pistons stated that you could run 1.8thou, but as I was turboing I felt 2.5 was best.
