Heh - i've been trying to trace the original problem in my mini for a wile, and i've got a solution: Its the earth from the engine to the frame.
Symptoms were identical, and on several occasions it filed to start. I renewed the starter, went over all the electrics, renewed the solenoid, used a Jag V12 battery, checked the timing etc etc.
Still did it.

Experimented with jump leads direct onto the block and starter, and got a result - if i replaced the earth to the battery with a jump lead, then it span over happy as larry.

Moved the earth strap from the engine steady to the clutch mount position to a specially made bodywork mount (nutsert and pillar) after discovering that the clutch/brake mounting plate for the engine steady at that side has a thin insulating padding strip invisible under it (look at the rover diagrams).

Bah. Kept the V12 battery as it fitted the battery box (!) changed the battery connections to clamps rather than lead+screws and cleaned up all the earths and went over the wiring loom witha dremel+wire cup brush. Finally a light spray of contact preserver (green gunk thats conductive).
Goodbye reliability problems.

Hello head gasket woes.

Heh. It did the job!
