I reckon a diesel 205 is probably a better idea than a BMW, the 205 diesels go on and on for ever, the BMW would be more expensive just in terms of service bits etc, and definately more to run, my 205 diesel will do nearly 60mpg on a run if you sit at 70 mph. Also don't know where you hope to go to uni but if you will be living in the middle of a city a 205 diesel is certainly more 'anonymous' than a BMW.

Im 18, whilst my mini is bieng fixed with the std 998cc, driving 1.1 fiesta about. Then when minis on the road, gonna stick either 1.6,1.8 or 2.0 in the fiesta depending on what engine mounts I can get my hands on, then use it as my tow car and have a TM for the track till I can afford both on the road!! Tom give me first dibs, pm me when its for sale ill come and see it. Insurance on them is well cheap. Just got a quote on a turboD too thats not bad either if i add it to my policy, the 205 uses the no claims and the mini is just the same about without the no claims.
