The place that does Muay Thai also does Krav. Might be good to learn both and mix it up abit.

Definately, although Krav is essentially a mix of everything, but refined for fast easy use for self defence only.

It isnt about getting into a fight, or pulling fancy kicks or moves. Plain and simple it is disable the attacker by whatever means necessary and escape.

Getting into a habit with any type of MMA or sport does see people starting to get into a sparring type fight, instead of concentrating on what self defence actually is.

And Krav is brutally effective, simply because there arent any rules.

Doing a defence class is one thing, but if the Police get wind you do some serious martial art and break bones in defence, they take a dim view. Especially if you have some kind of licence. A friend got 2 months, even though there was camera footage that proved it was defence.

Now that is nonsense. What is the point in learning self defence if you arent allowed to defend yourself.

And a license ? like a dog license or something ?

Camera footage is a dodgy area. All you have to do is present yourself the wrong way on camera, and you're screwed whether your the innocent party or not.
And self defence also stops the second the thread is gone, ie your cue to escape.

If you do get in a tricky situation from a legal perspective, you need to be careful what you say. Never make a statement immediately, when you may either be in shock or full of adrenaline. Never second guess your actions. What you did was the only course of action you could take to defend yourself.
But as already stated, any defence must be proportional and reasonable to any threat.

People teaching street self defence should advise on the legal aspects though if you ended up taking things too far etc or presented yourself in a bad light on camera, or in a statement. Remember, solicitors and the police can and will twist and manipulate everything you say to make you appear the guilty party. So be careful what you say !!

But everyone needs to remember that here in the UK, there are probably more CCTV cameras per head of population than anywhere else in the world. Even if you perhaps are being more aggressive than needed, make sure you never appear to be the aggressor on camera !!
Never stand ready to fight visually, never have fists raised etc. Again any good instructor would be telling you this anyway.

Although it also helps having an instructor within the police system, who also has close connections with many judges who can advise.

I thought you need some kind of licence for competition fights. I apologise if I'm wrong. :)

Theres self defence, then theres kicking the shite of someone who threw a punch at you!

Martial arts training or self defence classes require no license.

Almost every aspect of competition requires a license, what's the big deal about that ? That's purely down to the sports governing bodies. Nothing else.

stevieturbo, i don't think Jason was talking about self defence courses, but about the fact she has learnt martial arts!

An assault is any act which intentionally – or possibly recklessly – causes another person to apprehend immediate and unlawful personal violence

I feel by what youve said, he hasnt caused an assault as you dont apprehend any violence!

[Battery] is any intentional touching of another person without the consent of that person and without lawful excuse.

The other thing to remember, all this talk of self defence in some cases can be construed as consent! are u wanting him to attack you so you can retaliate?

My two cents!! cant write well on this iphone!! :)

He has caused assault previously, so I don't think proving he'd tried it again would be much of an issue.

The talk of self defence is to find out where I stand should it happen. Of course I don't want him to try and hit me, I'd rather not having to see/deal with him but unfortunatly my family and friends live near him so inevitably I will bump into him at some point.
