Thats what I have read, I think that the SC12 kit version I have should help little as its turned down but then it also has a belt attached. Who knows..

In the yellow bible uncle David writes on page 366 that it should be use at all times, though it can be machined down on light weight 850 and 1000.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

i think you will find that after a certain point (in the 1970s!) they were fitted to every a-series.

Im guessing there was a point to that

(Ive never had a 998 without one!!)

Out of all the 998 engines I have (11) all A+ so all later than '82ish only two had harmonic dampers.

I've had 4 998 engines, and the current one is the only one that does not have a damper. Its actualy the first non-damped pulley I've seen.

Turbo parts collector at the moment, almost ready.

I have an original 1988 998 engine without one.

Anyone have the facilities to find out what rpm the various dampers resonate at?

I think what we are seeing here is that ther were fitted to Metros and not Minis

I've seen 1 (what I believe was a) mini engine with. An unleaded 998.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

That matches what I have seen (although from a very small sample, one 998 Mini and one 998 Metro).

It makes me wonder if the mass of the fan, which the Mini has and the Metro doesn't, being driven through a flexible belt, plays some part in the damping process ???

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

It's the sort of thing you initially dismiss as the fan is light compared to a damper pulley, but only part of the damper pulley is the damping mass (most of the mass is in the centre hub) and the most relevant formula is I=(mr^2)/2 and the radius of the fan is an awful lot bigger than the pulley so the ^2 has a significant effect.

There is also a significant implied load on the fan when it is moving air which could increase its "effective" mass.

The belt certainly experiences harmonics - just point a timing light at one......

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Have you thought about KAD's viscous dampener? https://secure.surfinteractive.co.uk/cgi-bi...arts:MiniEngine

Hope that link worked. Viscous might be the way to go with your motor wil? If i'm not wrong, it's self tuning to the motor it's on, so really wouldn't matter if were a 1275 or 998?
