I am sure that drive by noise tests already exist in the UK, maybe I am wrong. They blood should exist IMO. When a V-twin bike goes past my house at full chat with no silencer you would know what I am talking about. Noise polution is a real problem, not just noisy stereos in the house next door.

As for measuring it, it is easy. Yes there is background noise, but this can easily be taken account of. we have drive by dB readings at some race events, they are different to the static reving limits though. Many track days use a similar system. The problem with the static tests is that they do not measure the cars noise properly. There is not enough gas going through exhaust or inlet to represent the real noise it will make when moving WOT.

Shhhhhhh.......

But currently they only test exhaust noise. How could you put a limit on vehicle noise? They would have to have different limits for different vehicles and then take into consideration engine sizes, etc.

What? No. There's a fast limit of noise any car must not exceed. End of story. Pretty easy...

new cars have to pass drive by noise regulations..

Exactely. Noise means ANY or better ALL the noise a vehicle emits. And not speciffically exhaust or transmission noise, but the sum of all noise emited.

As I said - I don't know about the UK; but over here it's even printed in the vehicles papers. Noise at idle and noise at drive-by. if you exceed that noise - you'r in the sh!t.... :)

Funny, the only noise my car has ever been tested on is exhaust. Oh and playing a stereo too loud at night but that was breach of the peace, not an actual vehicle based noise offence.

Already possible in France.

All modification who change technical caracteristics of a vehicle must be shown to scrutinity.
Nobody does it but if you have an accident, you're in big trouble.

Stage 1 kit already fall in that category as well as bigger / better brakes.

Rusty by nature

I don't disagree with sound tests as such, I just think it's absolutely stupid to ban something like straight cut drops because it's impossible to test the noise of that one specific mod when you take into consideration the noises that go with testing it.

Saying that, I live in quite a small village just outside Nottingham and I don't have a problem with the bikes that go bombing up to MFN or the boy racers who hoon past. The worst for me is the HGV's that cut through the road that runs parallel to mine, they don't necessarily speed all the time but the road noise is louder than any bike that goes past and some of them make the house shake.

So it's hard to draw the line on what is acceptable and what isn't.

dont forget the very old generation of cars had straight cut gears and they make a whine. i bet a BUS is as loud as SC gearbox, not sure about the drops. but i know some classics have a nice whine to them. Anyway if there is a noise test just stick it in 4th at 30mph and coast past without accelerating *wink* then they dont make much noise. Simples

i got pulled over by a copper on foot years ago for my car whining. he asked is it supposed to sound like that and i said yes, then he went out of his way to find something he could actually do me for.

i had a copper come upto me in mine having just thrashed it down the road infront of him and all he said was "having you got straight cut gears in that? i had them in my mini moke in the 70's it used to do 120 without a windscreen..." shame all coppers arent so nice... however i dont think they are illegal?
