If it goes lean quickly enough to show on an exhaust gas temp gauge your engine would be fucked anyway.

These things are all well and good to bandy about on forums but how many people in the real world have got an exhaust gas temp gauge in their car? Not many I suggest.

I would forget about an gas temp gauge. An air-fuel gauge is useful to spot DEVELOPING problems, e.g. caused by wear or carb going out of adjustment. A boost gauge is useful in case you split a pipe or something and start over-boosting. Many people block off the poppet valve in the plemun but I prefer to keep it as a "relief valve" in case of a problem like this. Get your engine set up properly on the rollers. Set the boost at a level and then don't mess with it, get fuelling correct to suit.

Tom all the big power jap and cossie boy have the egt gauges, maybe they are crap and these people don't know what there are on about, all the top power cars i know wouldn't have an afr gauge near there cars! that's got to say some thing!

Best 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds @116 mph

They also have wideband lambda gauges tho Matt....*wink*

I've been looking into EGT a bit recently, and still think a lambda is the one to have for the majority of those on here as it has a clear 'target' and shows rich/lean very easilly, so for tuning a needle for power and economy is pretty good.
EGT is something that I believe is more suitable for installing into each exhaust branch for making sure all cylinders are doing the same thing (balanced mixture) - ideal for weeping/sticking injectors and the like.
Not much use in each branch of the A-series admittedly (middle branch will always run hotter than the outers).
Most (decent) EGT controllers have an 'alarm' function that can be pre-set for when temps reach a level that is over that normally seen - I've seen only one Lambda reader that does this, and it's a very expensive dual Wide-Band reader.

Hoars for Coors, it's your shout. Personally, I'd never run a turbo mini without a lambda sensor. These are available for very little money nowadays (less than ?100).
