Its about time someone did something about the stupid price of fuel,i can`t beleive its taken this long for it to happen. But a fuel protest on a Sunday will do feck all! Also the people need to remember last time the Welsh farmers and truckers had fuel protests they made Tony Blair look like a tool,so his revenge was the start of Foot and Mouth disease!
I paid £1.45 a litre for diesel yesterday,i`m like most of you going to work to pay for fuel to get to work!

As much as I don't think it will really work I do think it's a brilliant idea. There aren't many countries out there that would take this sort of crap without protest so why should we?
I first started driving a mini in 2009 (I'm a young'n) and back then I could get a full tank for under £25, in such a short space of time fuel prices have risen.

Here in the Netherlands per liter we pay about 1.70 Euro for unleaded; 1.40 for diesel....! *angry*

Oh, and my Volvo needs 10L/100km *surprised*

does no one get the point though that actual value of fuel in current terms has not risen much over the years. The link John posted shows that current fuel price in 2011 is roughly 25% higher than it was back in 1983. What has changed is the value of the pound, which is why it cost 38p a litre in 1983 and now costs 143p in 2011. The actual value is pretty much the same. Its just the perception of paying 143p per litre that hurts

Yep Colin. But although the oil companies are still making obscene profits they havent increased their prices nearly as much as the goverment have ramped up the percentage of tax charged on a litre of fuel.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

No (but we all know it is), just that inflation causes the monetry value to increase while the tangible value remains constant. The retail prices index allows you to bring everything over the years back to a base line so you can truely compare the value of items since 1947.

You are right of course. the price of fuel at the pump shopuld be less in this high efficiency modern technological world we live in.

Oil companies keeping fuel prices up by reducing amount of oil being refined..
So prices could be lower before tax is added..
If I am not mistaken in the Netherlands over 50% of the price is tax.

In the UK we currently pay.

58p in fuel duty
57p for the fuel including delivery
23p in VAT

So 81p per litre of fuel is tax.

I work that out at 58.7% of the cost of fuel is tax!

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

p.s £1.15 per litre : 0.58190 fuel duty + 0.20125 VAT = £ 0.36685 per litre to the GARAGE (thus includes their profit too, as well as the cost from the OPEC country via your Petrol providing refinery, and delivery to site). Total tax therefore is £ 0.78315 per litre from your average £1.15 per litre cost. Without even trying to get political that, by my reckoning, is an absolute disgrace *evil*

Take this a stage further!!! and see the true disgrace of this country
for you to put £20.00 of fuel in your car at the 'Barrel' price
Start with £20.00 barrel price (what opec/whoever sell it at)
Garage Mark up £ 0.40 added by the garage
Add fuel duty £10.12 added and taken by the government
VAT £ 5.34 added and taken by the government
---------
this means at the pump you paid £35.86.

The extra stage----
to get £35.86 into your pocket - you worked!
and for the pleasure of working the government taxed your earnings at 23%
and they charged national Insurance at 11%

so your gross earnings were originally £54.33

and for the pleasure of your company employing you they had to pay 12.8% national insurance on top of that £6.95
(£61.28)
and if that was from profits of the company they had to pay around 20% coporation tax on it (on the gross before tax) £15.32
(76.60)

So for all your hard work that you did working for your company and helping them earn a profit of £76.60
you can put £20.00 of value of petrol in your car,
the garage gets 40p
.
.
.
the government gets £56.20 in varied taxes and national insurance contributions.
(all calculations are approximate and assume you are a payer of ni and income tax and that your company makes a profit----but illustrate the point!!!)

281% taxation in total, on £20.00 petrol!!!!

Whether the price has raised with the economics of the country or not, it still dosnt make it any worse as I havnt had a pay rise in that last couple years to fill the gap, it's seems as soon as I put 20 quid in my car it's gone, I hate to think how much shell has had off me in that past year it's ridiculous.
