Lets also consider the Metro is heavier than a Mini so the gearbox is not as stressed. cost :)

I always question the logic behind this. If the engine is producing 100ftlb then that is what is going through the gearbox, regardless of the weight of the car. The car may accelerate slower, but the engine can't exert any more stress on the box just because the car is heavier.

I feel your pain....I had exactly the same problem when I did a 2nd-3rd shift in my NA 1380 about 500 miles after a full rebuild top and bottom. Now I have the Clubman set and so far so good....at least it means I made some good torque after the bump to 1380!

The new setup...

Hmm, I guess I'm borrowed time then with my 1380 then on a standard box.

I think I'll avoid putting an lsd in for the minute which I was kinda hoping to do (currently having visions of dumping the clutch creating the pictured damage)

Wow. Exactly like how mine has gone. Did you find out the cause of the problem?

I used a standard box on the 1400 with 100lbft. It never had an easy time of it either, but was rebuilt around 6000miles then fitted to the 16 valver. Another 3500miles on that with maybe 100lbft+ bursts. To give you an idea, that was 50hp straight hit of nitrous, so not very forgiving on the box. 1200 miles towing a trailer to cornwall and back, hammered it all day at MITP, drove it home.

Melted a piston but never broke the box. The box has again be rebuilt and being used as a stop gap on the turbo build. Now I do expect that will break it, but at what point, who knows *happy*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

The metro van's last helical box survived 150bhp, about the same torque and a boat load of abuse. That had no rebuild or maintenance to speak of. I just fished the bits of broken diff out of it, changed the drops and pinion and chucked it on. Broke the first motion shaft bearing though...

I've thought about this for a few days and come up with an answer. Yes you are correct Ben, the maximum torque that the box will see is dictated by the engine not the weight of the car. But the average torque on the box may be higher as you will need nore throttle to pull a heavier weight up a hill for example.

Thus, a box from a metro may wear quicker. wear in bearings may then lead to failure, but it will not be directly related to the maximum torque.

I used the box that came with the sprint (mileage unknown) and just wacked the turbo 998 straight on it. Probably done 8,000miles now, it is a 'double-cut' HLE box.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

I've done the same damage twice. After the second strip down we found that the layshaft was bent. Replace the oil pump as mine was buggered after only about 30 sec of idling with bits of gearbox going through it.
Oh and failure happened after getting airborne over a speed bump........both times, you'd think I'd learn my lesson

Thats suprising to see an n/a engine do that, you can imagine what a more powerful turbo motor would do to one. s/c next i guess?

Im supprised. Ive ran over 110 curleys through a helical box without any issue. I suspect your box has been subjected to a few too many emergency starts.
