In answer to the original question-

If you don't have access to measuring equipment suitable to measure the crank journals yourself, why not take the crank along to the place that is going to supply you with the new bearings and get them to measure it for you? Any engine machine shop will happily do this for you...............

The most basic method I can think of would be to use a piece of paper cut to the circumference of you crank journal and then when laid flat and divided by PI should give you the journal diameter.
You have to be as accurate as you can because for every 10 thou of the journal the length of paper should decrease by approx 1mm.

Mains 1275 A+
STD = 160mm Circumference
+10 = 159mm
+20 = 158mm

Big Ends 1275 A+
STD = 140mm Circumference
+10 = 139mm
+20 = 138mm

Just a thought but might be worth a try. :)

And it measures both imperial and metric!

Ebay is a good bet - or screwfix often have them on 'special'

The problem with this paper method is that you don't measure if its conical/oval in any way. When I measure my crankshafts, I measure the jouornals in four places to be sure that it's not oval/conical.
Paper method won't do it for me...

Out of curiosity how many have you found that are Oval ?? because I haven?t found one yet give or take 0.0005" from the cranks i've ran.

Big end journals are always conical due to the silly A-series offset rods, and the centre main is always oval. When using the crappy A+ big main bearings, you won't notice, but look at an A centra mian journal, and you'll see that it's worn only on one side.

Round things can go slightly triangular too which you can't measure with a mic as you pick up on the high spot one side and low spot opposite,Check with a clock and 90 degree v block 8-)
