The way I read it was that the BBC will still be showing half the races live so it is not totally lost.

Having have the races is like having half a cock, pointless.

I have a dish for freesat, but I won't be paying sky, its a shame. Looking round at F1 forums, etc, there are a lot of angry people, Bernie also had to have a meeting with the teams about it, read into that what you want.

Here is the BBC reaction:

i think it's more to do with £'s per viewer as i understand it cost the bbc quite alot.
but its ok to keep paying the crap radio dj's 6 figure sums, and all the other waste of time shite.

I've stopped watching the rally this year as its not on free tv, and looks like in 2013 i'll only be watching half the f1 races simple as that.

If anything its either an excuse to actually get to a motorsport venue and watch it live, or do some work on the car.

Maybe the BBC could bring back the European Rally Cross championship, used to love that as a lad.

Wankers I can't tell you how much this has pissed me off today. It's the only sport I watch and whilst I have sky there is no way I'm paying for the sports package to pay for some over grown kids kick a ball about for 200k per year.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Not at my house, I get generally less than 1Mbps on a good day.

I presume that you are watching non BBC streaming?

The drip feed of information yesterday has changed the original proposal somewhat, of Bernie has realised he's in the shit and backtracked a bit. He now says that the BBC will show full coverage but not live. I presume that he just made this up on the cuff.

Either way it's the begining of the end.

What they seem to forget is that people like me don't want to have to subscribe to any TV service. so I will never get Sky. Thus if it is all on Sky I can never watch. I'm not going to pay for a 12 month subscription to a load of shit I don't want to watch just for F1.

That's what the BBC were saying when they made the announcement i.e. half the races showing live and showing highlights of the other races. I gave up my subscription to Sky years ago as it wasn't worth the money (adverts, repeats, distorted news coverage, information overload on the stuff I did watch with all the mini-screens and ticker data that didn't do all that much for me except distract) and Sky was costing more and more each year.

I'm not returning to Sky under any circumstance not even for F1.

You are paying a subscription to watch BBC live though i.e. license fee.

The trouble with F1 is that the commercial rights holders have over the years gotten excessively greedy and use the income from F1 to pay their debts elsewhere. They charge BBC £40-50M a year for the broadcast rights, probably would've been more next year and more in subsequent years. And the BBC are probably spending another £10M a year on staff and broadcast.

Not certain what the new deal costs the BBC, say £10-20M a year to the rights holders?

The license fee has also been frozen for the next few years and combined with what it's likely to cost the BBC to cover the 2012 Olympics they simply can't afford F1 and had to re-negotiate.

The only hope for total live coverage from the BBC happening again is Bernie passing on the reigns (not before time when it happens) + more altruistic rights holder rather than self-serving ones. Unfortunately that'll be years yet, if ever.

Yes it's possible but always pitfalls with quality, reliability of the stream, virus infection (watch out for streams that need you to download their "special player") and legality. So you need bandwidth, excellent google-fu to find a pirate stream, ideally a separate PC with a VPN to a country that won't hassle you for using the stream.

Most interseting today, qualifying.

All the practice sessions, although on BBC red button/internet, don't have the usual team but are commentated by the radio 5 team.

So first time the normal team are on air, terrestial TV, what do they say ???

Basically nothing.....

The only two comments I picked up were,

1 - Jake saying "obviously F1 has been in the news a lot this week so let's pick up on the track news (first)"... but never any mention of the current news, and,

2 - Brundle to Coulthard during Q1 - "so who do you think is going to be the driver queuing in front of us at the job centre next year?" (no answer from Coulthard).

Obviously they have been gagged by the BBC management.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

We all know this, but at least it pays for good quality and no adverts. Plus included in the price are Radio 2, Radio 4 and 6 Records all of which I spend much more time listening to than watching all TV put together.

I guess the problem is that if the audience is at a 10 year high it is prime time to sell on at the highest price. I feel that next year the audience will be an all time low. As has be mentioned, remember WRC?

I haven't even seen wrc in the news recently, not really thought about it much either. used to really like watching it even if the coverage on dave was too much random stuff and not enough footage.

A real shame as others have said, BBC got it spot on at the moment. Since they got rid of John from last year....all the crew have done a great job, especially the forum after.
I won't go to Sky out of principle...got Free Sat & Freeview. Perhaps the BBC should stop paying silly money to presenters of other shows if they want to cut cash flow!
Not a MotoGP fan....but will that be next?????????
