Just have a look here what can be done with an A series. http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=439410

I have started posting on Instagram also my name on there is turbomk1golf

Nothing is impossible it just costs more and takes longer.

I changed the topic as the genral jist of the subject has moved away from the 16v head. And as a few people have said they are "Wallet emptying" I have come across a 5 port 1275cc and wanna push over 100bhp out the engine. My budget is around 1.5k however I work at home and will be doing the build myself as apose to paying a someone else... i would like to keep the engine as possible but as this is my first mini and my first project im not sure which route to go down, because once you start you gotta follow it up... *laughing* sorry about the complications... No comparison. 16v every time, BUT, if I were to build a pushrod engine it would be an Arden 8 port. I just don't think I woud be happy knowing the 7 port is trying to be something that it isn't *happy*

You certainly don't need anything special in the bottom end of the engine for 100hp+ on a 16v 1293 motor

Plonk a turbo on there and your into 200hp at 15psi boost!!

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Turbo for cheap power mines a std turbo engine opend chambers air filter exhaust intercooler 12psi = 130bhp at crank 105 at the wheels just my opinion but still plenty room for improvement & got to be one or the cheapest routs to power

To be fair a 100+ 998 turbo is fairly easy to build.

7-port gets my vote. all the advantages of an overhead cam engine with a very simple build. I used a single TB which made it cheaper and simpler to build.

In NA form there is a definate advantage to any of the 16v heads over the 8v heads, but once boosted, this is less of an advantage.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

If I were after a everyday driver I would go with the BMW 16v.

I run a 1380 BMW K head in my hill climb mini running standard tune pushing out 130bhp, it is so driveable at low revs and goes very well.

In my clubby I'm running a turbo lump with a t3 9psi which is putting out 111 at the wheels, not best for a steady drive, need to be in the right gear at the right time.

Depends how deep your pockets are..

If in doubt... flat out! The words of a true legend

£1500 will just about cover a proper engine and gearbox rebuild with an uprated clutch and 4 pin diff. That's before you think about any performance improvements.

If you have a Mini, what engine is in it at the moment? 100hp is very doable on virtually any A Series if you fit a turbo.

Well i can cover the engine rebuild and gearbox, without touching the 1.5k that is the set aside for tuning, I have a 998. but as im getting a 1275 for well £75 then im gonna run that instead and service and rebuild my 998 as original... I mean a turbo is cheaper but you dont get the power in the low revs like you would if it were N/A *oh well*

Never underestimate a Mini!

And 16V have less power down low than 8V too.

If I were you, I would build a cheap 5 port carb'd turbo, just to warm you up.
And once you ride it for a while, you can think of the best way to use your 1,5K to upgrade it.
Be it a fancy head, refined turbo setup, injection or whatever.

The shopping list is the easiest and funniest part of the build but it's the one that doesn't get you very far ...

(I have been polishing my shopping list for 2 years and my car is not even registered yet ...)

What was that sign from the fast and the furious, might not be same 3 options but you get the idea.

Fast, cheap and reliable? You can only have 2 of the 3

I built my first turbo motor for £800, ran it for 2 years as a daily drive and put out about 150bhp...I'd class that as cheap, fast and reliable. *happy*

I found the 5 port turbo drove ALOT better than my N/A engine, the torque came in lower down, idled better and I didn't need to rev the nuts off it to get it to go anywhere.

That's why a 5 port carb'd turbo win all the times if you're not after (really) big numbers

After all, a 100hp mini is the same power to weight ratio than say a Clio 3 RS, enough to cruise around if you ask me ...
