"The current record for a 1000cc stock run is 194kmh (121mph), but one of the class records we want to have a crack at is 212kmh (132mph)," Mr Orton said.

Really?? Im sure a 1000cc car can be made to go faster than this without much effort. If i can get 80 out of a brick shaped bedford rascal with 970cc i cant see it being that difficult. How hard can it be?

Making the power is the easiest part of what he wants to do. And they did say the big record will be on methanol ?

But what actually is the record ? The specific rules etc for each record ? If he uses a BMW head, surely it isnt classed as a proper Mini anymore ?
Or is it purely an engine size record ?

if he's aiming for 150+, which is very achievable especially over such a long distance.
The hardest thing will making the engine survive long enough, and a gearbox and clutch that will survive long enough.

The speed itself is not that difficult to achieve though even with standard aerodynamics.

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

Fastest A Series Mini in the World

leeds/wakefield.

getting 80 indicated mph out of your bedford is not the same as covering 1760 yards in 40 seconds

i towed the Don down to the rollnig road shootout last saturdey morning,

i left my house at 07.50am , and arrived 140miles later at the rollers 2hrs and 2 mins later, now don't think for a minute that sitting with 70mph on my speedo got me there in the above time,

Very few LSRs are easy...

At Bonneville you not only have to contend with altitude (4300ft) which for a normally aspirated engine would mean around 12% less power than the same engine at sea-level but also the surface is both draggy and lacking in grip.

Remember that the power to overcome aero drag increases with the cube of speed, meaning that your Rascal would need 4 times the power to do 125 that it would to do 80.

There are lots of classes that you can run in for Bonneville records - and a turbo A-series could be a good bet for some of them. From memory i think the fastest record set by an A-series was around 146 in a streamliner called Wee-Wee Eel, with a fastest one-way run of 172. I've got some photos I took of it when I was at Bonneville in 1999 - if I can find them I'll post them.

This is what we were running in '99 - I'm in the pickup that it passes just after the motor fires.

Points taken. It did take most of the M60 to get to 80 but she did it. Eventually.

Hope they do it and like you say salt is a very differnt type of surface to drive on.

I wish i had 4 times more power hahahaha but right now its got 4 times more rust than my hybernating mini.

Looks like they've dropped the blower in favour of a turbo:

A big intercooler has also appeared, so 250hp is starting to look like a possibility.

998's are probably ok to 9k, but its a 970 anyway so 9k will be a breeze.

with the salt flats being considerably above sea level, it is easier to turn up boost on a turbo, than it is with a supercharger. It is also asir to start conservative and work towards that final all or nothing run.

9k turbo engines are nothing new

"We had a guy in England tell us we'd need 250-horsepower to make a body shape like the Mini's go at the speed we wanted. We have more horsepower than that," Mr Orton said.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.
