I must confess, when I was younger, I drove a 998 that was a modified 1275 in reality.

Kept the 'tin' rocker cover, plastic airbox and even that funny tin thing that pulled hot air off the exhaust (with an LCB underneath it!). Looked very nice and standard.

No way you can ever get away with a 'turbo' engine as a 998 mind...

Yes been there done that as well.

My best coup de gras was when I told the insurance company that I was fitting a maniflow LCB and system, as the original replacement exhaust system for my 1970 Mini Clubman Estate was obsolete, and so this was the only exhaust that was available. They asked "Will it increase performance" I replied "No I don't think so, it is supposed to be more economical"

I got a letter back saying that my car was registered as being fitted with a modified exhaust, no extra charge, thank you very much.

No.

And more to the point should you happen to have a serious accident, whether your fault or not, the insurance company will inspect your car. If they find undisclosed modifications they are well within their rights to withdraw cover, and they most probably will. Now think of the scenario that you had a spin and hit a car with a family in it, injure them all and now the main earner cannot work. So you are being sued and faced with a huge compensation bill, and have no insurance to cover it.
No good using the "I would return it to standard before they inspect it" as if you are in hospital with a broken leg you are not going to be doing much work on a car.
Sorry to be a bit morbid but insurance is the one thing you CANNOT afford to bugger about with.

At the end of the day, if you can't afford the insurance get a different car.

So let us go over a few things again, You're 18 and have a Z3, and you're complaining about the cost of insurance?

Am I missing something here?

am i right in thinking that you could buy say a crappy 50cc moped, get that insured and gradually build up no claims with that? say for a couple of years. So put the mini in your mums name too and then build up the no claims on moped insurance? u wouldnt have to tax/run the ped, just insure it, it wouldnt be much and at the end of it you would have no claims bonus for nearly nothing?
forgive me if i have been malinformed and am sprouting shit.
When i was 18 i was paying 1174 a year for a 1.0i pug 106 3rd party and now i am 22 i am fully comp for around 400 i think. I am hoping my mini insurance will be low cost as it will be
a) a second car
b) limited mileage
c) i'll have 4 years no claims by then

however if i do get shafted i'll just use the ol' student loan to pay .... cheers for paying taxes you lot *wink*

i wish you could do that with a moped, i have 2 years no claims for that, the thing is you cant transfer the no claims from the bike to a car so you have to start from scratch :(

i'm not from cardiff! I live nowhere near infact! I live south east england! I think the only people even slightly near me on this forum are Alex B and Nicky.
Its gonna be real hard for you with 2 cars in your mothers name, you're never gonna have no claims :o you'll be paying through the roof forever! unless there is a significant drop after 25years even with no no claims ..... i would say i feel bad for you but thats the price you pay for owning good cars i guess :)
