I heard in the 480 scene that std internals were good for 400bhp once ceramic coated, furthermore the engine itself was taken as a base unit from renualt (f3p engine iirc 1.8 8v) and then developed upon by volvo and porsche together (cant remember where I read that) Its not a fantastic engine - but its a cheap way to build a mk1 clio turbo which is what I wanted as well as the mini turbo :)

Altough I might be to forgiving for their products, this 1,7 L turbo engine from Renault is not their best.

Weak point seems to be the pistons.

Head is flat too wich doesn't help finding alternative pistons.

If the engine was good, why didn't he make it in the Renault range ?

In standart trim they are 120 cv and it is said one should better tune the 1,4 (also 120 cv in phase 2 ...)

Anyway, I digress : RWD 2,0 Volvo, I keep hearing "TURBO, TURBO, TURBO" !

I'll ask around (I work for Renault and one of my colleagues worked on the F7R back in the 90's)

As far as involvement in devellopement, a car maker who buys an engine from an other usually only set up his requirements and tests to comply with.

Usually this makes for a better engine as it have to be OK for two car makers requirement.

The best story is the Triumph Sprint engine wich was further develloped for SAAB and ended up getting a nitrided crank along the way.

480 engines are sought after in the R5 GT Turbo scene (and given the weight advantage of a R5 over a Clio, it is clever)

If I were to build a turboed Clio, I'll fit a F4Rt header on an F7P, rephase the cams and use moderate boost.
But I am just making the assumption the header fits on the earlier engine.

Now, if you excuse me, I have to go and copy 100 times "I should not digress on other peoples threads" ...

Rusty by nature
