Sorry bud even when I was a student working two shifts a week part time in McDonald's I could afford a Clark 90a welder, awefull cheap machine but the torch wasn't constant live, tis your eyes :) you can get them second hand for buttons.

Get a half decent mask preferably with low battery indication, quick reaction time, use good batterys, check darkness is correct.

Allways use the mask.

Be aware that in awkward positions the sensor needs a direct line of sight to the arc, otherwise it may not react and you will get a flash, aaahh.

I know what your saying, it's just a matter of not needing to spend money on other things at the time a secondhand one comes up, I could afford to buy a lot more when I was a student all them years ago. no commitments and all my money was mine.

Worst thing is you can't look away when the doctor starts poking your eyeball with a needle. I almost fainted, they had to put me in a wheelchair to get me out... *happy*

Re: arc eye; I've flashed myself (uh, erm *happy*) a couple of times - but never had an arc eye... Which makes me think; how do you get it??

I'm happy though, 'cause welding is a big part of my job... And it's not always possible to hold the shield, a piece of sheet metal and the welding torch all at once... *happy*

I have many a time too asphalt, you must have to get a good amount of exposure to it before you have any problems.

On another note my eye is ok now, must have got it out but it must have scratched my eye, as it still felt like it was there.

It's depends on the intensity too, I have never had it with a diy mig, I got it when I walked round into a welding bay to ask a question, no more than 2 yardmds away he arced up with a 5mm rod and probably 350-400amps.... Never again.
