Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not denying that it hasn't been done etc etc, I just haven't heard of Ford doing anything like it! I'll have to ask at work now!

If anybody is developing an engine for efficiency then there will not be a supercharger in site. Mind you in my opinion if anybody is developing any forced induction for any application there would not be a supercharger in site.

The problem with electric chargers on a 12v system is that you need serious current to make the boost.

Thanks for the link, i'll report back on this one when I find out more! I still can't see them actually considering it to the extent of prototyping, but I'm prepared to be corrected :)

*Correction - They have indeed tested both mechanical and electric superchargers!*

Advantage is that the new df4t engine that i have in the clio?
My clio is a little 1149cc turbo 100bhp standard but there are companies running them to 140 with everything stock. I get 40.9 mpg on my short journeys to work which includes a blast everyday down a dualy. When we went to cardiff the average mpg jumped up to 46 from just driving there and back (average based on 5k of driving)

Drives
-Ford S-max Mk2 Ecoboost
-Rover 100 VVC #2 - track project

Searching is all you need on TurboMinis

For a normal supercharger I would agree, but if it were to be electric (like Colin's link or similar), it wouldn't have a fixed ratio to engine speed - it could be totally down to the ECU if/when it ran and at what pressure.

Yes, but batterry technology has moved on and 12V is no longer the limit - the current generation of hybrid petrol/electric cars are running 200V. It wouldn't have to be that extreme for a supercharger motor but could easily be a lot more than 12V :)

You are right, most drives I work on are 600v though. Still seems a lot f bother and complexity and weight when a Turbo or two will be better.

Yeah weight of one to a turbo is an issues but they just might use the Pc fan's ;]

So just how many turbos will these 1.0 engines go through in 200k miles then especially if driven hard? Surely the turbos are being worked very hard to produce this sort of power?

I'll stick with my 300tdi defender engine - 2.5 litres 110hp, nice and unstressed.

I believe the estimated life cycle is 150k miles before things go bad! Thats for the engine not the turbo, i'm not sure what components are the ones that fail though!

Once they start getting used more widely and ending up in breakers, it should be a nice source for small Bosch coil-on-plug ignition set-ups.

No, it's the H5Ft wich is 115 bhp and will be seen any time soon in the Megane Phase 2.

Compared to the D4Ft, it has direct injection, DOHC, both of wich are dephasable.

D4Ft is an old engine now.
The H5Ft is all alloy and a more square bore to stroke ratio so is more rev happy.

Rusty by nature
