Wiffin claimed 200 bhp....got the Miniworld!..so 192 on PB's rollers is maybe 160 ish(ISH)..about right for a 14.1 quater mini. In the "early days" i do remember Stu G's car and Wiffins and a slack handfull of others, the first British Mini showdown i did as a turbo'd class D was maybe 9 years ago and the class was maybe 5/6 strong.

As far as who did the first mini turbo goes, i Know Ed short and a guy called Gerry from Taunton did them in the early to mid 90's.

I know I certainly wasnt the first to turbocharge a Mini, but was well up there, in the UK anyway. There have been turbocharged ones from years aback. Even Vizard mentions a few suck through designs..

94 was the first Santa Pod event. Pauls car was normally aspirated then. I still have the trophy for fastest turbo mini.
It ran 14.7 @ 97 back then. In November that year, I ran a 14.5 @ 101mph.
Your car was faster Stuart it seems back then, but its also some 300kg or thereabouts lighter !!!

I did keep the timing slips, but I havent a clue where they are, same with the photos of the event. I moved house a couple of years ago, and lots of stuff seem to have went awol.

If you recall Stuart, we first met at that First Santa Pod showdown, although you werent racing ?.
At that time you showed me your heads, with large exhaust valves. When I got home, I sent you my Avonbar head to fit large exhaust valves to, which worked a treat. At that time however cracks were noticed beteween the valves. These gradually got bigger, which is when I bought a complete new head from you.
I had major problems with valve guides + sleeves falling out initially. ( offset exhaust valves )
The 2nd head with offset drilled guides sorted this, but I always had a bad missfire around 6000rpm with both your heads on my car. I tried so many things to sort it, eventually putting the cracked avonbar head back on, and the car ran like a dream again.
Thats when I approached Swiftune for a new head, as I wasnt going to keep running the cracked head.
It worked perfectly.

Maybe someday the car will run again. But its been parked up now for about 5-6 years. Rust has taken a hold, obviusly it hasnt been MOT'd or taxed in that time.
So its unlikely it will be going anywhere let alone Santa Pod in the near future.

Yes the turbo runs a organic plate, as does virtually every production car.
That doesnt mean you cant fit a paddle in its palce. They are both the same thickness. The paddle just grips better.

Even more interesting at the time. Miniworld after the event gave good mention to the Mr Swifty, the fastest car there that day. And Mark Le Maitres 2nd fastest car.
For some reason, 3rd place was never mentioned ??

I admit, I spoke the Miniworld crew at their stall that day, and made comment on how their 16v Mini ran. They said they were taking it easy as they had to get home in it. Needless to say I laughed. I had a lot further to travel than them.

I was actually very shocked at the 16v's All the talk in the magazines at that time, were 150-180bhp. There certainly werent any 1/4miles ran that day proving that sort of power.

I ahve no doubt in my mind, that if I lightened my car, put sticky tyres on it, and perhaps a shorter diff, more appropriate to drag racing and did some proper work with ignition etc, very low 13's, or maybe 12's should be easy enough, with perhaps some 110mph terminals.
If a 900kg car can do it in 3 gears with 100mph+ terminals with road tyres, a sticky tyred lightweight racer would fly.

Ive never done a photoshoot for a magazine.

I did have a couple of photos taken with 2-3 other minis at the event, just by the owners of the cars. One of them was turbocharged. It was a blueish green sort of colour. It had grills fitted towards the rear of the bonnet, much like the grills at the foot of the windscreen on some older cars.

my little trophy.

Ahh cool. Ive just found a couple of photos and timing slips.

No scanner, so ive photgraphed them. They are a bit dull, but if I use the flash, its harder to see.

I'll leave them full size and link them rather than post them here directly.

top thread , a trip down mamory lane , i remember Mr swifty, from way back it wasn;t turbo charged but ran highpowewr nitrous, it always looked a bit heavy to me , how i used to scoff at his claims of power , that is untill i started using the old N2O.
i cannot say i recognis eyuor car stevie , but i first run at the showdown in 97 and the reat is history,lol.//

To be honest, it probably doesnt sick to mind, as its just a plain simple standard looking road car, with a few tricks up its sleeve..

Just the way I like them. Personally I'm not into stripped out cars or ones with lots of flashy bits or bodykits..

The first Mini showdown was the only mini meet I attended. The other trip to SP was for the Guy Fawkes weekend that same year
3 people + luggage in a mini all weekend...it wasnt pretty. The saturday rained all day, but luckily the Sunday dried up, for the RWYB.

Steve, I'd like to be in the 12's too, but without nos I don't see it happening. National mini showdown next year, will be July at avonpark. would like to see any road legal mini, on road tyres get in the 12's

Even so, to cross the line at nearly 101 well done, how much torque is your engine pushing out?

If a Renault 5 can do it. I see absolutely no reason why a Mini shouldnt be capable.
I would think, thats if I was able to shave say 200-250kgs from my car, which relatively speaking is a massive drop, and get some better tyres, still with current gearing, Im sure a 13.5 would be quite possible. My existing terminals show I have plenty of power to get good times. But due to weight, gearing and no traction, it simply cant do it.

Take it one step further, choose gearing better suited to the 1/4, fit a LSD and some proper sticky tyres, more suited to drag racing, and more importantly, properly map the engine's ignition, then why shouldnt a 12 be possible ? I know it seems like a long way off, but it can be done.
I ran my dizzy welded, set at about 24 deg all the time. How much power and torque do you think thats costing ?? A hell of a lot I'd say.

I have no idea what power/torque my car has, as it has never been near a dyno.

If you believe you will never do it, than you have litte chance.

Suppose you would also laugh if I told you I had a 1980 Mk2 Granada that does over 180mph, and currently runs 11.5 @ 133mph again in FULL road trim on road tyres. No lightening whatsoever, raced as its driven on the road. I am hoping for 10's before the end of the year.

You might think you cant build a 12sec capable Mini.
I think I could.. Tuning a Mini just isnt top of my list of things to do.

But the chances of me ever ruling the world are zero.

What is so impossible about getting a Mini to run in the 12's ?

ok, put it another way. If somebody funds it. I'll build a 12 sec mini.

Im spending enough time and effort, and money to get my Granada into the 10's and still remain a road car. I see it as rather pointless to start working at my Mini again, for it to be 2-3 seconds slower, and much more dangerous to drive.
I have no interest in turning any of my cars into a stripped out shell with an engine. It would be of little use to me, and not enjoyable to drive. Minis lack creature comforts as they are..
I think those are enough reasons not to want to do it.

Ive already said I dont know. I could maybe make a guestimation based on 1/4 terminal speed, but thats about it.
