To be fair stretched tyres aren't as bad as everyone makes out, obviously you wouldnt want them on a performance orientated car but I run a 165 45 15 on a 7 and a 185 45 on an 8 on my daily drive :)

Just my opinion but the reason the arches/wheel combination look good on that VW is because the arches are part of the wings.

I've never seen anything on a Mini (including Leyland/Rovers own ones) that simply look what they are - added on.....

A mate of mine once did a wide body kit on an MR2 turbo (custom import) and it only looked presentable because the arches/wings looked as if they were all one piece.

Once you accept that the arches are add-ons, the aesthetics are all different.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Could try fine a Golf or something in the scrap yard and cut them off? I think mini's would look better with smoothed in arches I don't wanna be drilling holes in the mini :/

No its Black and white, Bret has already told you where to find the detail in respect of legislation. as coppied below

Wings

63.

(1) Save as provided in paragraph (4), this regulation applies to—
(a)invalid carriages;
(b)heavy motor cars, motor cars and motor cycles, not being agricultural motor vehicles or pedestrian-controlled vehicles;
©agricultural motor vehicles driven at more than 20 mph; and
(d)trailers.

(2) Subject to paragraphs (3) and (5), every vehicle to which this regulation applies shall be equipped with wings or other similar fittings to catch, so far as practicable, mud or water thrown up by the rotation of its wheels or tracks.

Nothing grey there

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
