The VR should give a 5v signal, so you should be able to put a meter accross the two wires when turning it over.

If you can get the laptop working at least you'll be able to see if its reading the RPM.

My Girlfriend found my cable, so will be able to get MJ running on Sat morning.

Will get to grips with the multimeter tomorrow, so will head round scrappers if I need to replace anything

I have a spare edis somewhere, I can have a look for it, if yours is knackered.

Okay, just had a bulb to check the EDIS is giving a power/signal to the coilpack ont eh outer pins and nothing. Bulb didnt even flicker no light what so ever.

Looks like EDIS could be buggered?

Just going to continuity check all wires and check for a 5v feed from teh signal. My neighbour has a fiesta with a spare coilpack so will try that too

Okay so just tested the sensor:

Put a live on the + pin on the sensor and the earth on the engine. Nothing

Put a live on the - pin on the sensor and the earth on the engine. Nothing

Put a live on the + pin on the sensor and a earth on teh - pin on the sensor. Nothing

This is while cranking it over. The live and earth I am referring to is with the multimeter.

Does it look like my sensor is buggered? Would that cause me to not have a spark at all? Am I just being a knob and testing it wrong?

Cheers

Just tested the vr sensor by putting a washer on the end and pulling it off. The Multimeter needle moves up slightly each time I do it, so Im guessing that it means the sensor is okay. Just been through and double checked wiring and I get a reading from everything where it should be

How big is the gap between sensor and trigger wheel. Has the wheel got a missing tooth?

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Gap is 0.8mm, its a Tom Fenton pulley Jobbie and yeah missing tooth.

Jus found the coilpack doesnt spark the plug when teh trigger/signal wires are earthed so does this mean taht the coilpack is screwed?

Just thought of a classic error that catches a few people out: make sure that power is going to EDIS and the coilpack whilst the engine is cranking.

I believe the top right connection on the fuse box will provide 12v while cranking and while in postion two on the ignition barrel which is what you need. You will obviously need a relay to safegaurd the fuse and stop it overloading as well.

The sensor sounds fine, but it may be too close to the trigger wheel at 0.8mm. Try spacing it out a little to something like 1.5 or 2 and try again.

Just a thought, I have the earth strap attached to the adjustable engine steady and then aswell at the other end. I read somewhere thats how the later minis earthed the engine - this wouldnt be my problem would it?

Did you space out the sensor? When you've tried that, also try reversing the two sensor wires and try again.

It sounds like the EDIS unit is almost certainly knackered.

If you read instructions for senser when you buy the kit as I did, the gap should be .05 to 1 mm, and works good for me
