Macs are completley overpriced and un needed.

I have a HP laptop a pavilion DV6 and its done me fine. I re-format it every year just so its fresh for when I go back to uni.

Take it from a student:

Buy a mac if you want to show off or can afford it but its un needed
Buy something with a decent enough processor and ram (4gb + ) and youll be fine.

End of the day all you need to do is run word.

stop hating a read what i wrote; and i think you proved my point exactly lol

I re-format it every year just so its fresh for when I go back to uni.

i dont disagree they are overpriced i just said they age better with the OS and its more stable. Some people consider that a premium some don't. Each to there own. FYI im not an apple fanboy as i use a pc as a home computer; although i hate it :)

Key words were "just so"

Its not a requirement but its just what I like to do.

Buy a mac if you want but youll be paying about 1200 more than you need to

macs are 900 with student discount... maths not your strong point *happy*

Rob,

Anything from the £350 - £500 range will cover a standard students needs (word, excel, internet etc).

The length of time a laptop lasts will depend on how well its treated.

Spending more will get you better (faster) components and perhaps a better build quality but all laptops are fragile at the end of the day. Any processor will work for simple tasks and amount of RAM will determine how much you can open at once.

My advice would be to go for a manufacture thats well known and get a good warranty deal because component failure is possible in any make/model...

Personally ive just replaced a dell laptop that lasted 6 years with another dell. In this time the screen failed in the first year and they came out next day and replaced it. No problems since.

Thanks for all the replies. We've gone for the Sony for a number of reasons. Hopefully it will last the test of time

My Sony vaio lasted for about 6 years, it's just packed up though:( Think I will be getting another when funds allow as it was really good. I think using it in my car finished it off!

I reckon for laptops used in cars its worth whacking in a solidstate hard drive, theyre getting pretty cheap now,

I've had my gateway laptop for two years now. It is fast for what I need it for, surfing the web and online school. I am upgrading to a Mac next month as I hate the mouse battery life (2 hrs) and the weight and size (model NV53) of my gateway. It is not as portable as I would like it to be and I have been jealous of my friends who have Macbooks. I can't wait till the end of the month.
