So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Right, after knocking all my knuckles off and reciting nothing but potty language for a couple of evenings, it's out.

Thing is, it doesn't seem to have any obvious play on the bench. Is this normal? If so, how can I check my spare without fitting it.

Yup.

It had play just on the drivers side.

Track rod ends are good. Ball joints are good, steering arm is solid.

its normally the passenger side that gets play, irc you cant get rid of all the play on the driver side before the cog binds against the rack,

also the balls are a bit like bottom swivels, they have a spring that can mask the play, give them a good push in and out.

best info on rebuilding racks is in old 60's mini manuals.

also, when it goes back together lube it with EP rather than grease.

Hmmm? I'll have another look tomorrow.

It's odd. I can accept that there could be a little play, but I could move the drivers side wheel shit loads while the passenger side seemed rigid.

the best thing to do is get one from Aus....

the australian cars use a sturdier rack with a thicker rack bar... they are always whinging about how imported racks are inferior!!

I've double checked and there really isn't any play in the rack.

:/

I think I'll fit the other one and just check everything else. It's really odd.

weird,

does the rack have the centralizing bolt hole? if so when ts on lock the rack up and give every thing a good shake and try to find the movement,

check the bolts that hold the steering arm to the hub?

just a bit more rack info , if you have the back of the subframe bloted through to the under heater area , then if you stick some 3 inch long bolts in there ,and leave about 2.5 inches out ,you can lever the rack forward enough to winkle the rack u bolts outs and pull the rack out of the drivers side .

i recently had a 70 mph off into a 6 inch fence post ,and bent the rack end about 4mm out of true .so had to remove it ,and change steering arm .

Medusa + injection = too much torque for the dyno ..https://youtu.be/qg5o0_tJxYM

Whoops. Lol.

It came out in the end and I kept the rack that was in there and used a shitter as an exchange unit.

Funny thing is, the new one went it with little effort at all.
