newman-cams.com explain the different materials used in the manufacture of cams and cam followers.

Newman Cams being one of THE cam manufacturers in the UK other than Kent Cams. I also read somewhere that Piper do not actually grind their own cams, but contract it out to one of the other two. How true that is i don't know.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I think it's only us that use the term billet. They seem to use the term "blank".

the term billet is used pretty loosely and probably incorrectly half of the time.

A billet: A small, semi-finished piece of metal that is rectangular, circular, or square in shape. Billets are smaller than blooms. Some definitions refer only to the rectangular variety

So basically a piece of metal.

Nowadays the term billet more or less refers (incorrectly) to something that has been machine cut from a single piece of metal

I.e. take a piece of round bar that is then machined first then hardened , then ground. Or ground and then hardened depending of the capabilities of the maker. ( corvette Ls7 cams are made this way) .

Nowadays a single machine can automatically take a piece of round bar and machine it into a UGL cam that then gets transferred to a CNC grinder. The UGL cam ( un ground lobe cam) could probably be referred to as a blank.

The machine does not care much what it is fed so you can also stick in a forged piece of metal. That has some specific properties that are nice and it eliminates the need for a lot of the machining. You can still only partially machine these and you get a blank/UGM cam just the same.

That sir, is not rust, it is the progressive mass reduction system

Generally anything cut from standard section of plate is refered to as a billet.

The fact that cam manufacturers use the term "blank" infers that the cam could be cut from a piece of standard round bar, a forging or a casting.

Given that the A Series cams are supposed to be manufactured from EN34 tells us that they should be billet as EN34 comes from the old BS970 which in my day referred to wrought steels, i.e. round bar.
