I've not yeat heard of anyone making metal parts with a 3D printer - but using the 3D printers to make the molds is becoming more commonplace:

did a project on this a few years ago .

after cracking the 3D problem we went a step further to 4D printing .
this proved a little problematical ..the first test run we got the date wrong and the component , i think it was a rubic cube , materialised in a mammoth in the early ice age , confused the hell out of the archeaoligists .
second test we printed it out ,and then ,due to a space time paradox in the lab , it appeared at the same time as we were printing it , in the same palce , so creating a black hole to to massive density ...everyone was killed apart from me ,due to me pre programming the machine to print out a self duplicate in case of malfunction .i dont remember my penis being this big before though .
