Wickets and Toolstation are both owned by Travis Perkins.

I hate the way Wickes, b&q etc absolutely screw you over for the small things. As Oli said, a 50p fitting is £3. I just don't bother and order stuff like that online or from screwfix etc

As I understand it B&Q and screwfix are owned by the same company. I guess this is just shopping around though. B&Q know that it is easier for you to get every thing in one shopping trip. So some stuff has a small margin and other stuff has a large margin. So long as you know its fine.

agreed T@z; the old saying - expensive as feck but open on a Sunday!

through business, I have a fair bit of experience of some of the bigger merchants and there is a significant variation in pricing structures. as an example, I cannot get gyproc any cheaper than B&Q/tradepoint for small quantities, (buying pallets and you have a bit more strength of negotiation) however they draw you in with a £1 saving a sheet and then shaft you on fixings; clever marketing.

In recent months I'm finding better and better deals from the smaller independant suppliers and shop about a fair bit more when i can. An example was a saving of over £10 plus vat/ sheet for 12mm ply over the tradepoint bulk discount.

I'm now taking the stance that I want to support smaller independant traders in the local community

as i run a small buisness in scotland ,i know what your saying rob ,but most small buisnesses are really making no money or very little trying to compete with the likes of b +q and similar big buisnesses, it only takes a small problem for the likes of myself to call it a day ,how long can you go on making almost nothing ,the banks just dont want to know ,very difficult to understand how the goverment work ,printing more money to get out of a reccesion didnt work , and were supposed to part own the banks what a load of crap, they wont lend ,so people wont spend their savings a terrible situation all round

give em hell

From Sheffield now live in York tha noz

Well thats exactly the point, if your working/live 2 mins away from a b and q you ain't going to waste precious fuel and even more precious time going across town to your preffered merchants. As I have said, where I live its no more convienient-clifton moor York there's a toolstation and Wickes within walking distance, and screw fix is in between the two! And they are all open early in the morning and late into the evening 7 days a week give or take, so why am I going to use wickes again?
And I'm willing to bet that is a repeated in various places around the country, they have big overheads so it doesn't have to be a lot of stores struggling to bring the whole lot down to the point where its not worth carrying on. In times gone these places have had all the trade from the diy market as there were no alternatives but people are getting a lot more savvy, they shop around much more and of course everyone's an internet expert and people will not keep paying over the odds forever.I really don't want to see wickes or anyone else go its very sad to see, I just would not be suprised if it happened.

I agree, as more people tend to shop around they will see that Wickes DIY items such as screws and fixings and cheap electrical switches etc are priced a lot higher than elsewhere.

998 t2 ongoing project.
