Most exhaust manifolds are round though. Even Mini LCBs.

Just look at a BMW S54. Round exhaust ports. Nothing flows better compared to size.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

I had one of these heads fitted to my car when it was a 5 porter. Bloody good head, the chamber shape was err, different, but the ports where done very well. Someone could get a bargain here

It's easy to sit here now in the internet age where there is loads of info and pictures out there and criticise, but this head was done by heads you win, either mark Haswell or one of his mates, and was on a turbo mini doing the business when some folk on here were still in nappies. Yes things have now moved on but if it wasn't for folk back then trying things to see what worked, we would most likely not be where we are now. Show a bit if respect!

How long ago ? I cant see how a bit round open chamber like that would have been deemed an advantage at any stage really ?

As for round or square ports, really makes no difference in my book. They maybe had an exhaust manifold with round ports, so round just made more sense.

If you check the intake and exhaust ports on an oldish LS, there is nothing round or square about them. If they flow they flow.

I think the goal back then would have been to try and get the compression ratio down, 15 and 18cc pistons were just not available then.

Well 15cc were - but only the 350quid forged omegas. And that seemed like a huge chunk of money when we were all 10 or 15 years younger - And when the perfectly good 12cc metro turbo pistons were easily available...

When I did mine 20 years ago, I just whacked the top off the pistons. Not ideal either, but at least it retained the chamber shape in the head. Was easy to drop CR quite a bit, I had mine down around 7.5:1 and that hadnt even impacted on piston crown thickness.
Best of all...it cost virtually nothing.
