SO. Why haven't anyone tried drilling a hole in the centre main or the other mains that goes from the oil gallery, pointing towards the pistons? If we drilled a 1mm hole here, this would do the same job. Anyone seen this done to Minis? I've seen it done to other engines.

Found this on a toyota web site.
Grooved big end housing looks good.

Tazzy, are you interested in homebuilt aircraft?
Did you ever see Bob Hoover fly his routine in the Shrike Commander (on one engine) it was amazing.

I'm interested in engineering. I was born and raised near airplanes and cars. My dad used to be a police officer on the airport & drove numerous mini's & a beetle when I was younger. My brother then moved on to Land & Range Rovers. Easy to work on due to size but not as much fun as a mini :)

One of things that stuck with me is how easy the beetle engine is to take apart and how Bob Hoover improved the lubrication.

Any pictures Nic? Especially on a Mini, this should be very easy to do. It might weaken the centre web, but I doubt this is much.

Just went to pick my zetec jets up...cheers for that pic Dave worked a treat..*wink*

Just a quickie...whats the best way of removing the jet from the mount without fooking it up completely?

They look/feel fairly fragile!!!

Firstly - find a piece of tube with an 8mm hole in the end (drill it if you have to). Hold the 'tang' in vice jaws, slide the tube over the body of the jet (the area that'll locate into the block later) and simply lever it off.

The weld holding the tang on is very brittle, so will break cleanly off.

Easy Peasy, Jim likes Flossy. :)

leeds/wakefield.

also take note that if you put too much heat into the main body when you weld the locating tang back on you will collapse the ball and spring inside, and it will become blocked,

I guess FastCarl has got Zetec jets in one of his motors then??? :)

I knew from tapping them with a pin-punch that the bodies were not very thick. A few little tacks around the edges with a MIG is all you need to hold them in place. :)

Uploaded some pics for you guys!!!

Here is the (world) first ever Zetec jet install using the (more difficult to work with) zetec jets that are best ignored.

Here is spot-facing done on the (either Jims, or my own) engine block.

Here is a close-up! Note the largest 8mm hole, then a 4mm or so drilling about 2mm deep, then a 2.5mm or so drilling at an angle towards to main gallery on the front of the engine.

This is how you remove the tang:

Off it pops!

Does anyone have a method of testing these jets once they've been fitted?

I was reading that Tarzwell-fella's book the other day, and he says he once tried to se how much oil the gearbox splashed around. After ten seconds, the gearbox was empty ( drill on the input shaft, no engine) and he spend fourteen days removing oil from all the walls and ceiling in the garage. This means that unless you're running a windage tray, undercrown cooling jets are an absolutely waste of time, maybe with the exeption of #1 cylinder. Yes, there I said it!

There you are fellas - we've all been doing it wrong. Vegard said so.

Although I think it's a desperate attempt from a jealous man who hasn't got any jets...

he is trying to make me machine the block for the jets for him. I have resisted so far, and now he doesn't want them anymore by the sound of things:)

He has borrowed the Tarzwell book from me though, and Tarzwells is a legend and worth listening to. Vegard has a valid point, but as I am running with a tray I will install them.

No I'm not saying it's right, I'm after a discussion. You agree, there's bound to be LOADS of oil being flung up by the gears, also proved my Mr Tarzwell. I'm fitting jets, but i'm also going to use a windage tray.

Ive seen jets inserted into the area underneath the bearing cap. I think they were vauxhall ones but dont quote me. They had ball bearings so would only operate after a certain pressure. The surface where the bearing cap sits was modified with a channel to feed the oil to the jet.
