Yep. Trailer would need to be plated appropriately.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I would do the test, you could end up paying 3-400 more for a car that only works for you legally.

That's a good shout, Neil. Any idea what the MAM is on the Passat? I can't find those figures anywhere.

It's a bloody minefield, and more to the point no one including traffic plod seem to have a proper grasp of the intricacies of towing a brakes trailer of more than 750kg on just a car license.
The other stumbling block, unless you buy your own trailer then you will be hiring, and any hire outfit that doesn't wear a wide brimmed hat and shout YEE-HAR a lot won't hire out their trailer unless you have B+E on a post-97 license.

How after nearly 20 years, have they not sorted the guidance out yet. Unbelievable. Probably because its more profitable to write out a ticket for when you do get caught out.

The other issue is the plated weight of the trailer. For example I understand even if you are under weight, if the trailer has say a MAM of 3500 kg, then you can't tow it with a B only licence because of the plated weight. The way round that of course it to make up a plate to suit your needs!

From what has been said, i'd seriously consider getting the license sorted. It will make the whole thing so much easier now and in the future

Yes, my father has a twin axle trailer with a gross weight of circa 2600kg, so even empty I cannot legally tow it with my B only licence.

Did some googling earlier and couldn't find anywhere local to do the test in a swift fashion - they all want a few days of my time. That costs a lot more (to me) than the £300. Anyone local to me done their test?

I think your only option is a defender, a 300tdi is 1740kg with a mam of 3500kg

I'd contact PRG Jim first off. I have a PRG trailer and they are very helpful when I have contacted them for spares etc.

i just built a truck as i have the shit license. You have to keep the weight as low as possible so you can carry a decent weight with the 3.5t limit. the project owes me 2.5k ish but i have no doubt you could do it much cheaper if its only to shift a track motor about :)

obv if your buying a car only for towing then this is an alternative. that said, i loved my old mk3 mondeo, tddi (rather than the fickle tdci's like mine) mondys are pretty cheap. but i used it every day too.

It certainly is Dave, especially if like me you missed the cut off in Jan 1997 by only 8 months. As well as the trailer restrictions it means you also can't drive anything larger than a 3.5t van, so no 7.5 tonners.

This little lot weighed 3400. The trailer is a lardy twin chassis tipper though, so with small trailer and BMW there should be plenty of cars out there to tow with.

That set up is illegal on a post-97 license. It doesn't matter what the actual weight at the time is. It matters what the combined MAM is, and looking at that I'd guess it's more like 5.5ton.

Yeah, that trailer is rated to 3.5 tonne, Which is relevant to my post earlier about the stupid plated weight thing.

I bought a car mini sized car trailer last year, its a home brew job so has no plate. im going to get a plate made to suit to save any agro with the plod as im on a post 97 licence. tow car in an e46 320 so im well in the regs only towing a mini.
but with regards to the op id suggest doing the test and then be able to get a bigger car, i wouldn't want to tow anything more than a mini with my set up
