'Practical' means how much stuff can I fit in there to me *tongue*

When I were a lad (In my best Hovis voice) sadly that may not mean much to many on here...

My first 2 cars were Minis, 1330 - twin SU's / 1380 - DCOE

I was serving my apprenticeship at Longbridge and it was an 80 mile round trip each day, I think only 1 day was I left stranded in 2 years (on the Bristol Rd at Selly Oak) - SU needle valve stuck.

The 1380 / DCOE deaf'nd me but always got there

My 2 year old Metro Turbo ('86 car in 88/89) let me down more often than I remember - I moved to MK1/2 VW GTi's for a decade as a result of the Metro.

So I think in my experience it's more can you tolerate your Mini...

For some reason I am back here...

I suspect "Is your Mini practical" means something different now than it did in the mid 80's

So I guess then 'practical' meant 'reliable', before MJ etc, so a new condenser, points, dissy cap was practical as it got me there...

Apologies - ever so slightly Irish Whiskey fuelled.

OK, Practical means;

How much stuff can I have around me when I am broken down by the side of the road :)

But seriously though the internal dimensions of a Mini haven't changed since 1959, so the question "Is your Mini still practical" means what have you done to it to make it less practical - Turbo minis - you could Turbo it and not change the interior / boot?

If (when I finish it) mine doesn't break down - I will consider it practical

I want to use it as much as is practical and that limit is if it gets me to work

:)

My mini lost practicality several years ago. Weber 45, no sound deadening and 25mpg put the end to it being the daily drive.

Since then it has become even less tolerable. 50 miles is about the limit on the road before just wanting to reach the destination. Fun until then though.

My mini is a daily, and I'd say its fairly practical, just in the last week alone I have done nearly 400 miles, and another 90-100 tomorrow, about half of that with three people in the car as well. Normally don't drive it so much, but it prefers to be driven rather than sat about! Always plays up if I haven't driven it in a while.

The van is std except 123dissy and decnt coil so its a jump in n go anywhere job

Clubby is full trim small boot due to twin tanks its in bits plan is to have it a nice "quite" ha straight gears.. Comfortabl weekend/after work toy witch i think it will be

Your right about modern cars changeing what a dayly is after all we dont have things like ac power windows electric/heated seats electric mirrors bla bla so in terms of todays practical dsyly not a chance i think but as far as for the period they built em in and us keeping to that it can be done

Not a mini so apologies but my A35 is used whenever I need it and has been very practical. It has more space than a mini of course, which helps when we go away for a week.(Why is it that we could go for 2/3 weeks in Europe on the motorbike and manage perfectly well but we had the car stuffed to the roof for a week in Devon ?)
The blue blobule does 40mpg on any journey over 20 miles, cruises, off boost, at 70/75 and, now that I have cured the lurch on setting off (just raised the tickover) it is even reasonable to drive in traffic.

It too is far too noisy and stiff over bumps, but if you are trying to force a 60+ year old design to do what this does, there has to be compromises.

I honestly feel that I can jump into anytime and go anywhere without worrying about it - is this not a definition of practical ?.
