I suppose if you look at some of the people who spend £10k on an all-singing all-dancing NA 1380 and end up with something with no torque below 3500 and is useless for the road. In terms of hp per £ a turbo engine makes sense.

Not totally agreeing here.

Probably just as many Turboed or SC cars with melted pistons, clagged gearboxes and stuffed clutches as there are unusable NA build cars. Probably ALL of those examples are down to lack of thought to the entire build or not having the dough to do it properly. But a well built turbo will be a good bang for bucks proposition

The thing is, my engine is like triggers brush, as I have broke it I have needed to swap it, so it Is very hard to work out the cost.

I have started posting on Instagram also my name on there is turbomk1golf

Nothing is impossible it just costs more and takes longer.

Its a never ending cost owning a turbo, i've found. wouldnt like to add it up.

What the mind can conceive the mini can achieve
MITP 2012 17.01 seconds 1/4 mile against "The Don"
MITP 2013 16.83 seconds 1/4 mile

To keep things in perspective, this engine shown here had a conrod cap fitted backwards, threw a leg out of bed under load and was driven to destruction. 470,000 GBP engine, total loss. ( I didn't fit the cap ;p )

If you build it to a spec suitable for the boost level & power you have in mind you will be fine!

Just don't do this when you get to the rollers:-

I wasn't really talking about reliability as such, as you say that depends on many things. But in terms of drivability and practicality (power band, torque curves and fuel consumption) a turbo donk wins and is a lot cheaper.

it doesn't have to cost the earth. rough cost and spec for my first 1275 turbo motor.

engine block complete £40
sw5 cam second hand £40
SEcond hand turbo phill head no more than £250.
2wd cossie intercooler modded by benross £60.
all the turbo gubbins came with another engine I bought.

it made £130bhp and was nice to drive.

current motor has cost a bit more but again not the earth. it made 160 bhp last year on just 13psi. it will cost even more if you don't have a clear plan of exactly what you want from the car.

I think you would have to be incredibly lucky to go turbo for that cheap anymore, esp 1275.
With regards to reliability I'm not really doing anything drastic until I have a second car and a garage to store it in when it's broke *tongue* so it *fingers crossed* should last. That is unless it blows up when I take it down the strip for comparison *happy*

i'm saving up to 2500 euro ( about 2000 pounds) to build the engine and gearbox. hoping to go around 150 hp. lets hope it is enough.

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...
i rather blow it up winning than keep it together losing.

finish date set for project 1... march 2018

why shouldn't they last? my first motor mentioned above was using stock metro non turbo pistons. with the timing safe, lower compression ratio and sensible boost it made for a really reliable fast road motor.

and it was done on a shoestring.

you can have forged pistons etc etc, all singing and dancing, but the bottom line is if the fuelling is out, ignition out or too much boost it will go badly wrong, even with fancy pistons etc.

a beginners turbo motor doesn't have to cost a fortune. even a moderately speced motor shouldn't cost much more than a fast road na build.

130 bhp is relatively easy to obtain from a fi a series. this vs a 130 bhp na motor, is likely to be far more reliable. na will need lots of revs to make it work. turbo will not. all of my turbo motors can be driven like a normal 1275 mini off boost. the power only comes when your foot is firmly planted..
