I've heard terrible stories about VAG 2.0TDIs I've just bought a A4 1.9TDI and get 1L:18kms out of it. Previously I had a Golf 5 1.9TDI that did 1L:19kms great car, shame about the DMF Dazed and Confused.... |

My old fella had the old shape Renault Laguna, had it for several years with no issues. Good and comfy inside. Although it was French!

I wouldn't necessarily discount petrols out of hand. Cheaper to buy in the first place, the engines are generally more reliable that modern diesels, and once you take into account the price difference between fuels there isn't a lot of difference to running costs. Plus they warm up a damn sight quicker in winter than diesels, which I really miss on freezing mornings. |

Once you normalise the purchase and running costs, you might be surprised how little difference there is in it. |

In principle I agree, but buying with a £2k budget I don't think there's much argument against a diesel.

my misses has a 1.25 petrol fiesta same shape as my 1.4 tdci, with her driving her car it gets over 40mpg, if I borrow it and drive it like I drive my fiesta its noticably poorer, the diesel costs about £7 more a tankfull but i recon it burns £30 to every £20 in my diesel, me driving both. petrol is defo better from a maintwnance point of view, but the week on week savings are much more wallet friendly than the odd extra hit of expence. turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

its just with some diesels up at 60/70mpg range petrols cant come close? A modern Euro 5 (or even 6), in a small car, maybe. Wifey's Bini gets just under 60 on 30 mile runs each way to work and back but it's Euro 5 and what I consider to be a small car. In your budget you are looking at a Euro 3 at best. My Euro 3, in a large car does 43 - 45, maybe 48 on a really long run. As there is a fairly clear link between emissions and fuel efficiency, the road tax says it all. Hers is £0, mine is £180 (or maybe £190 now). Reliability - the early ones were unreliable, things are better now but still not as good as petrol IMO. If you get an early one where all the common failures have been dealt with by previous owners you're probably onto a winner. If not, the bill(s) will be expensive. Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ??? |

My sisters has been very reliable however the electrics are starting to play up, like you turn the indicators on and the lights flash! Those kind of things the engine has been good she has a 53 plate that was well looked after before she got it I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Anything french of that era will have electrical problems. They moved everything from standard stuff to complecated electricals and did a piss poor job. Dual mass flywheel on the hdmi is almost a service item. On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:

My brother had a xsara with the hdi engine, did 200k and was pretty reliable, but it had a few niggly problems. I'd say that with a decent history it's worth a look.

This thing was 650, then it dropped in price, he wants it gone now asap as his mrs has her new car... reckon 400 would get it BUT im now thinking do i just put the money towards the extra money in fuel my 200sx would cost? I know this is not good long term.. but i can get something a few months into 2015... plus theres still my lil daily hack mini.. money could go towards new bearing and couple new tyres, its lightweight and im not sure what kind of mpg id get putting it through that commute? The problem with running a mini or something like a 200sx is when they break they break big and the problems from that can take na eternity to sort... On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:
