May I suggest

I tried uploading a picture of the gauze as well, but it was too big. The picture that is, not the gauze. It was rather clogged.

I know the metro turbo challenge cars ran larger needle valves like Tom said. They also ran float chamber extensions to hold a bit more fuel. If that helps.

I might not have solved the problem entirely, but this did NOT contribute to the car running lean, that's for sure!
