We struggle to ship this stuff as it has a few nasties in it. Not allowed on passengar airlines etc and needs special packing. Not that it matters to tom bringing you some *happy*

No, I've used Nylocs and loctite instead. Should be OK. The later cars used bolts with loctite instead of studs and nuts I believe?

Not loctite, but a thread-locking compound applied to the threads. Very common on OE applications

A bit more progress-

Also found out I have a rogue waterpump. Its been a while since I have built a mini engine so when I bolted the water pump on I scratched my head for a bit trying to figure where the alternator mounted......only to realise the pump should have a lug cast in....

God knows what this pump is off, its brand new but I can't remember where the hell I got it from. If its any good to anyone then let me know and you can have it.

I have also found that I am missing the lower radiator mounting bracket.

Bolts on here-

Does anyone have one I can beg/buy?

That's a pump off an 'in-line' a-series i'm sure... That looks like a 'leyland' logo on it? unlikely to be MPi!
Note there is no (by-pass) pipe going up to the head either... Even metros had the lump for the pipe there - it just wasn't drilled out.

Don't forget to leave the long bolts loose - the ones holding the fabricated steel engine mount to the gearbox. Makes it so much easier to settle the engine in the frame and line up the engine mount holes.
Virtually every time folks have troubles, is becuase they've fitted this bracket, pulling it away from the bottom pulley, then tioghtening the bolts really hard - result; it doesn't seat into the subframe!

I did think it might be a pump from an 'inline' engine such as a Midget etc, but then surely those would also need the lug for mounting the alternator in the same way as on a mini?

Iain, let me know about those bits, could run over one night and pick them up from you?
Wil, cheers for the offer, will let you know if Iain can't find one.

Cheers all.

Morning all, as normal me and a few friends seem to be the last people on the planet to do what seems to be a trend now, and for the life of me I / we can't see why????

Daves comment
"I hope I'm not looking at the original 'putty steel' bolts between block and gearbox there??? "

I see your point Dave but what is the problem here???????? is it people have had there engines come apart or some thing, or is it just a leak issue???

As I really can't see a problem if you put it together right.

not trying to stir things up but I've used Normal bolts for years, and that's one part of the engine I have NO problems with (touch wood)

please advice as i don't want my engine to come away from the block, ripping out all the flywheel housing bolts that hold it strongly in place and end up with a block on the floor.

*wink**wink**wink* :)*wink**wink*

I have used higher quality bolts on my engine, firstly as i believe the standard Austin Rover ones to be pretty low quality, and over 20 years old in some cases. Secondly however, I used different bolts as the originals were long gone as I stripped the engine some time ago, and I also have a box of good quality UNF bolts and sets in the garage.

My personal opinion is that the std bolts are poor quality and old, but replacing them with better quality but standard dimension fixings is a good idea, although not essential. I think that for the very high revving pure race engines, an increase to 5/16" is worthwhile, but not for our application.
That is my opinion anyway.

Yes i see your point Tom And Dave they are poor quality, just there are a bloody lot of them*wink*

Yes any thing on a high rever is worth doing.
But i don't rev mine so should be ok.

Cheers Alex, leaks is still some thing i've never heard of . Funny isn't it. we all no of things that go wrong to different people, like my big problem is cam wear. Never mind:)

If you have cam wear issues have you optimised the valve spring fitted length? Maybe you need to machine your spring pockets in the head?

Just a few thoughts! A bit O/T like but never mind!
