I am using an A series linered block because it came from the old Gold Seal factory recon seup and had been linered back to standard bore.I tried to have ir bored to 73mm hbut was told its not possible as the remaining liner would be too thin for reliability -makes sense to me. I dont think there is ever likely to be a problem with liners up to second oversize.(40 thou over or about 1310cc))

How's this for an idea.... (not a serious one)

You fit short liners.

You lot are always banging on about how squish is important, how low compression ratios are and the extent of pain which you go to in order to get it.

Short Liners ™ will be your solution.

Get short compression pistons +however much. Let's go 73.5 and then overbore a tiny bit more, whack in a set of short liners (spigots) which are matched to your piston bowls. Short compression height pistons at TDC almost reach the short liners and you have a low compression engine with squish and without all the funking about with the head.

Seriously, I can't see a problem with liners from a thermodynamic level. Greater heat rejection (which is the way it would be) would be a good thing. I reckon alloy blocks with nickasil treatment are the way to go... would make a nice sideline for anyone producing A blocks, which they will in due course.

All this fuss about blocks, I was in the scrappy the other day and there wasn't a single A or A+ 1275 engine at all. No metros. I think they will start fetching cooper S money before long :(

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

I have short liners *tongue* So if anything you are in breach of my trade mark *laughing*

I instructed my machinist to makesure the liners sat on a ledge at the bottom of the bore, as a gaurantee that they wont fall out the bottom at 9000rpm *wink*

You can see it here

As for cracking, who, if any one has seen a dry liner cracked?

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Its a shame the supply from scrapped minis and metros is drying up. I have stockpiled a couple of complete engines now.

I won a short engine the other day on ebay, which is now sat in my room at uni, my flatmates think I'm mad.
