Well put guys. I've worked with a few of these over the years. Usually had quite a good laugh !! lol

I know a guy, when he interviews people he sets up a test. He will ask you to do a job, maybe bolt on a wishbone. He will put out a selection of tools that could be used to do the job, but are not really what you would use, he may put 2 adjustables as the only spanners. Those who use the tools provided fail, those who ask for the proper kit pass.

To work at a high level of motorsport you really need to be passionate about it. You can be working 16-18 hours a day for days on end, more at times. You can be away quite a lot, that will upset the mrs. But there also plus points, i just got back from a month in Oz and malasya.

Have you tried palmers at Bedford to se if they have anything ?

Its a clever test, although I must say if I were presented with it I would use whatever was to hand to get the job done, it is always nice (and correct) to use the correct tools, but on the other hand there are times when ingenuity and resoursefulness are required to get a car back out on the track/stage or whatever in the minimum possible time. I have been there and changed gearboxes lying in a ditch, you just get on with it with the tackle you have available, there is no point fannying about looking for your gucci Snap-off super duper tool, speed is of the essence!

Although as anyone who has moved my toolbox will vouch, it has the tools required for most jobs you are confronted with, and the associated weight penalty!
I once ran nearly 500yds with it into the end of a gravel stage after the time control to repair a suspension arm, my bloody arms nearly dropped off.

Your to right there Tom. I didn't say it was a totally fair test!!! lol. Some times it all goes heath robinson. I've resorted to pinching the cable trunking from a circuits toilet block to get a car back on track. You will grab and use anything that you think may help. I'd say these are some of the best times, when the shit hits the fan and you still get the car out.

I think my best was a stick used to block up a split heater hose....or maybe using a ratchet strap to pull a rear susp arm straight for the car to do the 15 mile road section to the end of the rally......

It is frantic at the time, but as you say very satisying when you get the car away.

When i was interviewing students, i took a tip from a collegue. I had two 'objects'. One was a failed component (eg a shaft) the other was an assembly - eg a shift linkage

You tell them to choose one to discuss. Imedately, you then find out if they're analytically minded or mechanically minded.
Then you get them to say what it is, what it'd do, any interesting features, potential failure areas - or in the case of the broken components - how it likelly failed.

Then you ask then the same about the other component! LOL!

It really is a faultless way of finding out how their mind is working, and seeing if they come out with reasonable suggestions, or just start drivelling on.

I also don't tell them what either 'object' is - unless they ask... Again, if (and depending on the way) they ask, you know they're actually interested!

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

I'm a Support Engineer for Siemens Gas Turbines. Basically supporting anything from deisgn to field staff with an engineering issues. Involves travel and being based in the office so i get a good balance.
I know the hectic feeling! if a customers turbine is down especially if its oil/gas field related then it can costs millions per day so if you have the customer breathing down your neck you work whatever hours it requires!
Have to say though i really enjoy it and its certainly difficult to find a job where you want to get up and do it every day *smiley*

One day i'd love to go towards motorsport but at the minute i'm quite happy buiding on my knowledge.

Currently doing a BEng part time in mechanical engineering.

*smiley*
