Yes, my old man uses these bead locks. They like to run quite low pressures to get traction (low 20's psi) but as a consequence sometimes roll tyres off the rim, hence using these bead lock wheels.

Quote from Alan Barry:

The last race I ran last November was at an airport . The layout was like a paper clip with long straights with chicanes and very tight corners on both ends.

I actually felt my wheel balance going away during the three days of running. My friend, Randy Arbogast told me his Hoosiers on the front actually move on the rim. Before my last race I marked with a white grease pencil a line across the rim and the tire.

After the race I was very surprised to see THREE INCHES of movement of both front tires on the rims.

My question is, why even bother to balance tires when you are mounting them? I guess they are smoother for a while. Is there any trick to controlling the movement of the tire on the rim? I remember drag racers actually screwing slicks to the wheels.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

I don't think it's the power that moves tyres on the rims. I's grip vs. brakes. The brakes are much more powerful than the acceleration on a Mini.

This is interesting. Next time I do a track day I will also mark the tyres and rims.
