Down to poor maintanance usually. Gasket probs on early engines mostly.

Most of the HGF's on K series cars are the later ones 1996? onwards (when they started using plastic dowls). I had to do one a couple of months ago on my mums 1997 rover 214 which was maintained well. Her old car didn't have any headgasket troubles whatsoever, which was a '94 rover 214...

On the subject of the 1.8vag 20v turbo engine. It can be mated to the pg1 box thats fount on all 1.8 k engines so pretty sure the bell housing used on the caterhams would adapt to the vw 1.8 turbo. I've just fitted the 1.8 k series in my mini.*happy*

First choice i have to agree with the K series motor. Nice and light and common parts. However the devil in me has a hankering after an s2000 vtec motor, redline at 9k and 240bhp which is bulletproof but terribly expensive.

Well for what its worth heres my opinion.

I'd stick with the K as you have it and the parts to go along with it and will have plenty of go in westfield. Having said that i dont like he engine hat much. The fleet of elises at silverstone gave no end of trouble heads and head gasket wise. What about 1 of the V6's ? may be an easy swap if they kept the bell housing mountings the same.

The xe is a good choice and can be fitted easily.

How about something more exotic like a Ford BDA ? Freind of mine once built a westy with a TVR V8 (out of tuscan racer). Was a job to package it all but was an absolute beast of a thing.

Another thought.

The mountings for belhousing are same with old ford kent (very common in caterhams). Not sure if ford changed the mounting pattern for the duratec, but if they skept it the same should be fairly easy to get a bell housing. May need to change you gearbox input shaft or you may be able to get away with having a cluth plate made with correct hub for your existing input shaft.

The six should sound nice as well. I would think in a good state of tune would be close to a rover V8 on power but much lighter

£1500 does sound like a bargain.

Think if this motor was mine, i'd live with the K for now while i got my kit of bits ready for a swap to a six or 8 cylinder. I'm liking the idea of the 6 more as i think about it.

They get the rovers in there, or is that a different chassis ?

personaly i think a nice big V8 as there quite light for there power.lol

the K engine is nice but have see lots with head gasket problems at 70,000 mile normaly. and on any age of car from old metros to 75's

i would avoid the S2000 engine. a friend had one in as the owner forgot to check the oil. all it needed was a rebore or new liner and a piston and bearings. Honda dont do bigger pistons or liners or to that matter anything!! a new engine is £9,000 plus fitting!!!!!!

A V8 in a caterfield is a crime, it should always be a screaming 4 pot as Mr Chapman intended.

Ford duratec engine coupled to aford pinto gearbox, a more expensive aproach but very reliable and light engine.

The sensible side of me says either a K series or a Zetec based on cost.

I presume you've already got the bell housing to fit a K series, if so then I'd go the K series route, due to weight cost and performance. As the caterhams had K series engines they are well supported & adaptors and the likes are readilly avalible from places like Millwood.

If you don't have the bell housing, I'd say go for the zetec as the first generation zetec engines bolt straight up to the type 9 gearbox (the joy of ford parts) and what you save in not having to buy a custom bell housing could easilly go into tuning the zetec.

The foolish irrational side of me says go for a turbo charged A series, using an inline block from a MG or a Morris Minor. It's an a engine you know, and have experiance tuning, there are kits out there to fit a five speed box (there's currently a bell housing on the bay, but I'm tempted to get that for my MG) finally everyones' done k series & zetec engines, but a Turboed A series Westfield would be different (note; different is not allways better)
