nicely done so far! I am looking at using Honda cam pulleys, the aftermarket adjustable ones are low priced. Example ebay.com number 250214489898, or 360021425113 for two.

Must have adjustment to get the cam timed. However, once I get the timing right I won't be readjusting it, so I don't need the simplest method of adjustment. I might make my own adjustable pulleys. The stock Porsche 944 and Pinto pulleys are too heavy. The 1.7VTEC Civic pulley is light, looks like a pressing not a casting. So I would make a BMW cam-to-Honda puley adapter with a dowel pin hole in it. 38 teeth means about 4.7 crank deg per pulley tooth. How much adjustment/resolution do I need? I think if I had 0.5 degrees of resolution through the range of 1 tooth, that would be fine; if I need more range I pull the belt off and move it to the next tooth. So here we go, set up the rotary table on the mill, drill 9 evenly spaced dowel pin holes in the Honda pulley. With one of them lined up with a tooth, the other 8 would not line up with a tooth. Comparing these holes with their nearest tooth, I get slight variations in position, 9 positions giving a total range of plus/minus 2.1 crank degrees around the middle of my reference tooth. Good enough. So let it be written, so let it be done.

Depending on pitch size which in general seems to be 3/8 pitch anything larger than 36 teeth won't fit as the pulley diameter becomes to big and they touch.

Ive just timed mine at 110 degrees IIRC and then when I get it on the rollers i'll adjust it to a point where it runs best. My pulleys adjust by just over one tooth in the slots, but obviously if you run out of adjustment you just move it round a tooth on the belt therefore being infintely adjustable. lol

36 teeth! Now I have to start over aaaarrrggghhh. Is it possible you have misconscrutinized your teeth count? The SC "How to" manual definitely shows 38 tooth Pinto wheels in Chapter 7.

If you are using the honda pullies, 38 tooth is too big, 36 is fine, and 34 is also fine but look a tad on the small side.

The 36 tooth honda pullies are off one of the American SOHC engines , 2.5 litre Del Sol? IIRC

The 34s are of the B series DOHC engines

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Got a Honda stock 38 tooth pulley out of the pile. The toe tag on this one says 2001 Honda 1.7 VTEC. Measures 4.485" diameter, outside of tooth 1 to outside of tooth 20. Stock 2.3 Ford pulley measures 4.484". Center-to-center distance of BMW cams measures 4.62" . Honda belt tooth root profile is round, not square. However, the stock Honda pulley has a ridge at the back of the teeth, with five timing nubs that stick out, the nubs and ridge would need to be turned down. If I could find my camera I would take a pic.

Maybe I was being a little conservative but by my reconing the 38 is a tad too big. 38 x 9.525 / 3.142 = 115.197mm

Pulley centers are nearly 117.6mm

The question is, are you happy with 2.4mm between the pullies? I wasnt, considering this is not a 'designed' engine.

Collected my TB tonight all is good! I have to admit I was a little concerned with distortortion untill I noticed the wall thickness its well over 6mm in the centre around the butterfly.

Cheers Carl, hope it will be ready in time!

I would of thought a larger pulley would cause more load on the cam bearings?

Yeah electrics are pretty much done apart from wiring them into the ecu.

Plumbing is nearly there too just the water pump and a couple of pipe connectors to make.

Im gonna have to wait a few months before the charge cooler goes in but that doesn't stop me getting it started and run in! :)
