Stu from Corwall aka Mr Jazz Piano, Love_Machine, kneegrow

As the gears are SC, it surely would be more easy to put a very nicely made spacer in between the box and diff housing and use 2 brand new gears.

Hmmm :)

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

IMO, as far as turbocharged cars go...I dont really see the point of a 5 speed, unless you can make an overdriven 5th gear.

Even with a 3.11 diff and 13" wheels, the gearing is too short ( I feel anyway )

Overdrive 5th = power loss that is why modern cars obtain their top speed in 4th not usually 5th gear

It's nowt to do with power loss - it's just to pull the revs down for economy.

If you ran a lower axle ratio (same percentage difference as the drop from 4th to 5th) you'd see little difference in top speed. sure - you'll lose a little - but it'd be little in the whole scale of things. :)

That may have been the case years ago when cars had only 3bhp.

Most modern cars with an decent amount of power, will top out, in top gear, usually 5th.

Cruising at 70mph at 3500rpm+, just isnt very nice, and there's no call for it really.
It baffles me now, how I drove the 1000+ or so miles I did on my first round trip to Santa Pod 12 years ago including blackpool, london and other destinations that long weekend in my Mini !!!!!

Someone has stuck an X badge on the boot ( trunk for you lol ), but it isnt an X...at least I dont think it is.

Not even sure if the earlier pre-facelift cars ever had electric seats anyway. I know some of the later 81 onwards cars did, but they are quite different to my early car.
It has the usual, PAS, electric windows, manual sunroof, used to have aircon too, which I thought a bit odd for a 2.8i Ghia. Maybe that might be X equipment ??

I remember stripping a GhiaX which i ended up banger racing, and that was full electrics and aircon. Took bloomin ages getting all the crap out of it... I seem to recall it was on a Y-plate (whatever year that makes it)?

That would be a facelift car....

Doors, bumpers, interior are all very different to the pre-facelift. My original black car was a 79 Saphire T reg, and I wanted a similar pre-facelift car to replace it, green one on a W plate. They only made them from 78-late 80, maybe a little of 81.

For 2 cars that everyone sees as the same, they really are very different.

I had a 2.8 Ghia circa 84 I converted to diesel once. It had electric seats, windows etc, although it was just a Ghia. Not sure what X equipment was.
