Check that crank sensor and the connector again, when mine was flaky it was similar, backfiring was definitely a clue..

My sensor plug had a flaky connection, but if the sensor is getting weak or the gap is on the edge it would cause these kind of problems, all it needs to do is cut out for a split second and theres a backfire, heat could be the difference..

How does the revcounter behave when its missing?? I would guess that it would react a bit if the sensor is flaking out..

well looks like it was a combination of different events.

1) Crank sensor connector was full of water.

2) a Plug had failed. i.e. no spark.

3) changed the coil pack.

Now it seems to be behaving, I've done 50 miles over the weeken and it hasn't missed a beat, lets hope thats sorted it.
